Sps
Hot Mulligan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're drinking before noon
You're filling up the sink
With all of your empty cans
It's why you're not on the lease
Been trying to tell you
But you're always asleep
That there's a difference between
Saying you're trying and doing anything

Catch the last of the summer
Parts of the nights that we didn't spend wasted
Grinding your teeth in your sleep till your jaw hurts
Biding our time till we say you're not worth this

It's playing like a wreck
You watch the fall
Then leave the aftermath to crawl
A broken lock
A stumble home at 3 o'clock
Stay hammered so we still seem enamored
Drive yourself home
Feels more like a home when you're lost

Catch the last of the summer
Parts of the nights that we didn't spend wasted
Grinding your teeth in your sleep till your jaw hurts
Biding our time till we say you're not worth this

Catch the last of the summer
Parts of the nights that we didn't spend wasted

Grinding your teeth in your sleep till your jaw hurts
Biding our time till we say you're not worth this

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Hot Mulligan's song "SPS" are a powerful commentary on the destructive cycle of addiction and its impact on relationships. The singer confronts their housemate's behavior, calling out their excessive drinking before noon and the accumulation of empty cans. The fact that the housemate is not on the lease suggests that they are not a responsible adult, and the singer has tried to express their concern, but the housemate's constant sleeping renders them a captive audience.

The second verse of the song is equally as poignant, with the singer reflecting on the past summer and the times they spent together. They acknowledge that some of those nights were wasted, but now the housemate's addiction has become a burden that they can no longer bear. The line "grinding your teeth in your sleep till your jaw hurts" suggests that the housemate is struggling with more than just alcohol abuse, while "biding our time till we say you're not worth this" hints at the difficult decision that the singer needs to make.

The final repetition of the chorus is a defiant statement of the singer's intention to move on from the toxic situation. They have seen the best and worst of their housemate, but it is time to say goodbye and move forward.

@Summersovergrowup

So crazy that every song on this album is a potential favorite. Truly a masterpiece.

Agreed

@alpaca9mm

For those of you wondering, SPS stands for "Soggy Piss Stickers", as in when you go to a show and the toilets are plastered with soggy piss covered stickers.

@c3kile

I think I was a bad roommate. That was such a specific guilt that I hadn’t felt before. Like when you forget your laundry in the machine and someone else has to clean their work clothes, and it becomes your fault that they’re late. Dealing with that feeling of seeing that person every day and knowing they know that you’ve fucked up. “SPS” is what they might’ve thought of me.

This one hits hard.

Meet girl at 12 spend the next 15 years chasing her around america.
Every once in a few years I would find myself spending the summer with her. Laying around drinking and goofing off. As we got older those trips became less and less fun. The late drinking night after night became a problem and soon found myself laying next to someone I no longer recognized nor found to be worth the struggle that was being with her.

One day I woke up and left.

Story’s over, sometimes happy endings don’t happen.

@theprodigalfailure7047

I'm in love with her right now. The girl you mean, but not the same girl you dealt with. She's saying she loves me, but she's too closed off. Our friends know more about her than I do. I love her to death, but she grinds her teeth every night with every nightmare and wakes up drinking or smoking to break the habit. What the fuck should I do. I wamt her forever, and she wants me forever, but what the fuck should I do to keep her. She's the love of my life and she's so broken, but so am I at 22, I'm confused and scared. Please. I need her everything. She ain't no slut or a whore either, but she's everything. Shes my everything. What can I do to keep her.

@colinsmith8450

Seeing that happening to me currently
