We're Gonna Make It To Kilby!
Hot Mulligan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gone for a month, make it years, make it years
No use for improvements, as the only one here
Fairweather friends are still friends till they go away

Now the house falls apart 'cause I can't fucking care
Empty cans for foundation, complete disrepair
Sleep in your bed, I'm fine on the hardwood
You've found someone new, I'm caught in these walls

I kept what you left when you left for new homes
All the blankets and cords, you don't need anymore
No more new faces
Burnt bridge, complacent
Stay inside

The house was alive with your footfalls and sounds
Now it's hard to contrive how to live in this house
No more new faces
Burnt bridge, complacent
Stay inside

Covered windows
Slowly, let the lights burn out
Ceiling panels
Falling as the house burns down

I kept what you left when you left for new homes
All the blankets and cords you don't need anymore
No more new faces
Burnt bridge, complacent
Stay inside

The house was alive with your footfalls and sounds
Now it's hard to contrive how to live in this house
No more new faces
Burnt bridge, complacent
Stay inside

No more new faces
Burnt bridge, complacent
Vacant rooms, leave traces
Long trails to places
Far from home, stay patient
Less calls, replacements now

No more new faces
Burnt bridge, complacent
Vacant rooms, leave traces
Long trails to places
Far from home, stay patient
Less calls, replacements

Peel the paint off
Cancer's growing from the house

Let the light in
Spread until the flames die down

Overall Meaning

The Hot Mulligan's song, We're Gonna Make It to Kilby!, paints a picture of a decaying house and a broken relationship. The opening lines are about how long it has been since the singer has seen their partner, with the implication that their absence has been long and painful. They express that the decaying house and the lack of upkeep is because they cannot care about the place without their partner. This shows a sense of ennui or emotional numbness where they cannot do anything without their partner.

The singer tells how they have kept everything their partner left behind - blankets, cords - even if they no longer have any use for them. The bridge has been burnt, but they are complacent and choose to remain trapped in their decaying home. They seem to have become so despairing that they have given up on the possibility of invites, belonging, and seeking new friends.

The song gradually devolves as the lyrics switch to more abstract and metaphorical imagery. Ceilings panels are falling while vacant rooms and slowly burning lights all spell inevitable doom for the house. They sing about peeling off the paint while lamenting that cancer is taking over the house. They end with the line, "Let the light in. Spread it till the flames die down", indicating a sense of finality.
