New Song
Hot Tuna Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Looked outside my window
Fog came up to play
That gray outside is around my head
Looks like it's there to stay
Looks like it's there to stay
Looks like it's there to stay
Can't you see I love you
I want you more and more
I see you here most every day
I don't know where you are
I don't know where you are
Time goes on and I get older
What am I going to do?
My mirror face keeps getting colder
My eyes still look for you
My eyes still look for you, now
Said my eyes still look for you
Sun came out this morning
Highway showed my way
Cracks in the sand pulled me into the sea
Washed my cares away
Washed my cares away
Washed my cares away
You know I want to touch you
My back end gives me pain
Your smile releases all my life
Like flowers under rain

Like flowers under rain
We start to live again

Overall Meaning

In this song, the singer is feeling trapped in a state of loneliness and depression, represented by the heavy and oppressive fog that surrounds him both literally and metaphorically. However, despite how isolated he feels, he still longs for a connection with someone, singing "Can't you see I love you / I want you more and more / I see you here most every day / I don't know where you are." He is acutely aware of the passing of time and the toll it takes, as he wonders "What am I going to do? / My mirror face keeps getting colder / My eyes still look for you."

However, in the latter half of the song, the fog lifts and the sun comes out, representing a shift in the singer's emotional state. He feels the weight of his cares lifted and "washed away" by the sea, and the object of his affections, the person he had been searching for throughout the song, finally appears and brings renewal and vitality to his life, as symbolized by the flowers blooming under rain. The singer sees this encounter as a catalyst for beginning to live again, ending the song on a hopeful note.

I loved this song when I first heard it on the first Tuna album in 1970. Still do.

A fella in San Francisco once told me that Will Scarlet took apart the harmonica and dipped the reeds in beeswax for that sound.
