Yeah it definitely is one of the only places that from the get go you could tell would be a nice place if run a little better.

The kitchen staff knew what they were doing and there were at least some standards for cleanliness in the kitchen (at least better than most.)

The rooms were pretty crappy but they weren't falling apart. With a new coat of paint and a solid cleaning session they could be a nice place to stay.

And overall the location is a big beautiful property that actually looks like an inn.

Most of the places on the show you can just tell that it's already too far gone to actually make a meaningful change. The kitchens are disgusting grease pits the size of a closet, the rooms are cramped and crumbling into dust, and the properties are basically just ugly, unmaintained houses.

This place is like the starting point of a Stardew Valley-esque inn management game. Little bit of fixing would go a long way.

There is zero indication that these were particularly down in their luck people any more than any other service worker living paycheck to paycheck.

It's not uncommon for room and board to be included as part of wages especially in rural or remote areas, and once you are there, you are trapped waiting for the money you are owed before you can leave.

They weren't happy to not get paid to have a place to stay, she literally says at one point she is too scared to confront him because he will yell at her. For wanting pay. At her job.

I've been in this position, lived on site and the owners would only pay us enough for our staff or us, so we would take as little as possible because if we didn't pay the staff who didn't live there, they wouldn't come. And you need them to come so the guests are taken care of because otherwise how are you possibly going to get paid.

Hard to find a new gig with no gas money, and hard to find a new place to live without a paying job

For those that don’t wanna look up the status of the location, it’s closed as of 2023. Layla’s was actually getting good business and had a 4.5 star rating. The owner had a heart attack last year and decided to sell the hotel to a new owner. The name will be changed to Sweet Maple Inn, but that’s all I know

Idk if you're in the industry also but I was a chef for 2 decades before covid. Now I'm a budtender and couldn't be happier. But I cooked for a few famous people back in the day, its nerve wracking but you rise to the occasion. Little update: The hotel actually did well after the show. Sadly in september 2021 Layla passed away and in late 2022 the hotel was sold after Sandy had a heart attack in February that same year. Layla's riverside lodge is now called Sugar Maple Inn. Sandy now owns SSS Ranch farm & kennels, where he breeds English Setters and has all kinds of farm animals.

Layla’s is my favorite Hotel Hell episode. You can tell the owner actually cares and that the employees do too. Also, it was so satisfying seeing those small dog kennels turned into something nice. I would’ve let my dog stay there if she weren’t such a gremlin. It sucks to hear it isn’t around anymore but I’m happy that it lasted as long as it did and that the owner has new horizons!

People don't usually complain. They never come back and tell all their friends and family never to go. I owned a restaurant. Getting customers to give complaints is actually difficult. I made sure all of the staff knew this fact. I trained them and to get customers to honestly open up if anything was not to their liking. I've had two customers who came back the next day because they knew we wanted honest feedback.
Oh, and the kid who caught the tongs that Sandy dropped, that kid must know how to juggle. You have to have quick hands in a kitchen.

Sandy, really touched my heart. My gosh I kept crying thru that episode. He is who this show was made for. Someone with that much heart, and passion for what they want. He needed some guidance, and to stop hiding. Of course the renovations made a huge difference. He was like a new man, and it really filled my heart. I felt so bad for the Chef. He wanted nothing more than to live out his passion, and have the freedom to do it. I am so happy that he got that, and that everyone is getting paid. You know someone is a great person when a dog stays at their feet (according to my great-aunt Gloria who was a dog trainer and obsessed with dogs lol). Layla came to Gordon and stayed by his side, at his feet under the table, for his whole meal. She was so comfortable she fell asleep so deeply he checked her pulse lol! That's how I know he's a genuinely good person from the inside out. He's got a tough love attitude and demeanor but love is definitely where it all stems from. I'm so glad he helped Sandy's inn become successful for as long as he did. And RIH Layla!!!❤❤❤

Somehow i think that at least some of them must have been previously homeless, or highschool dropouts or addicts in recovery etc. I mean many people struggling in life not being able to pay rent nor even put food in the table would most likely gladly accept free housing and meals for working in an "inn" that doesn't even really have customers. To me it seemed like they were basically just living as a one big family under the same roof, which is probably why they stayed around for so long without getting paid.

I think that only the head chef had a family of his own, and it sounded like he didn't live at the inn, so he probably got some sort of salary, but the others seemed to just have had a lot of misfortune in their lives and were just thankful to the owner for giving them a chance and a warm place to stay.

Did a quick Google and apparently a room rental in nearby Dover is about $500 plus food and in Vermont a single person can receive a max of $300 monthly benefits. So, unless I'm missing something, leaving would put them at -$200+food/month.

It’s kinda scary how you don’t have to be qualified to own a place, it doesn’t take any talent to spend money. When you hire people they are supposed to have all these qualifications etc. but for some reason the person in charge is just someone who wanted something they didn’t know how to run. It’s been weird to watch all these again in the current economic climate, I wish they would give some of these owners like business classes and stuff.

I laughed about the dog hair in the food too, my cat sheds enough to knit a sweater, and I comb him everyday. Even if you groom a dog they still shed lol. Human loose up to 100 hairs a day! Sorry for the loss of a beautiful pup, glad the owner is ok.

I just love how nice Gordon is to the wait staff!! As a former waitress, I would always get blamed for the food coming out of the kitchen, even though I wasn't the one cooking it. One of the main reasons I left the food industry!

The only waitressing job I ever had, I got fired from 😂
A guy came every Sunday, he ordered the same thing and hated it... abused me over his order.
I simply asked him why he ordered it if he didn't like it.
He demanded that I was fired.
The owner fired me on the spot 😬
I've had many bartending jobs and made excellent money with no problems.

It's awesome that Hotel Hell is able to make those expensive renos that these businesses may not have the expenses to afford as they fall apart. Not only does Gordon kick the staff into gear and try to get them functioning somehow, he leaves them with a visually stunning place that literally draws tears from the staff.

This is the best episode. Even when the employees were talking about negative things, they were still respectful and you could tell they love their manager. They were all very sweet people. I would’ve stayed at this hotel and I don’t even have a dog lol. Charming place really.

I feel like most of the employees had been homeless or unable to keep their jobs for some reasons. Not to insult anyone based on their looks, but some of them really do look like former drug addicts. An addict in recovery out of their own free will or homeless person would probably gladly accept opportunity like this. Getting a place to stay and warm meals for working in an inn that doesn't even really have any customers seems like a pretty good deal for someone who is unable to get/keep a "normal" job.

What reinforces my suspicions even more, is the fact that none of the staff complained about not getting paid, and seemed genuinely thankful when they got their first paychecks. There weren't any "about damn time"- comments, only pure appreciation, which makes me think that the employees were simply thankful for someone to give them a chance and a home in the first place.

This hotel was in dire need of Gordon's help, Sandy was overrun with duties but not sure which he should take the helm at. Most episodes have the worst owners or something is wrong with their way of running their hotel, Sandy was/is the most grateful i had ever seen on the show and seeing the 100% turn around is amazing. Its a shame the hotel was sold but happy it had the success that it so deserved.

Laylas is one of the best success stories in the shows history. Its been sitting at a 4.9 rating on google for years, i check it all the time. Had to come back and watch it again. Hopefully ill make my way to West Dover and stay a couple nights with my dog.
