A project stemmed from two friends' love for guitar music, Houses and Homes is a folk project based in Valdosta, GA and headed by Josh Green and Josh Zorn. They incorporate unusual song structures and arrangement with the more traditional characteristics of folk music. However, Houses and Homes is not only two people. They see it more as a collective of friends contributing musical elements and sharing their instruments and skills to make the end product something more than they could have made alone.
Sister
Houses and Homes Lyrics

We've broken the bread
And I choked on a thread
Again and again
Fist in a ball
My arms as they haul
Away from your body
Away from your skin
You see, that's my twin
She's standing aside and she's my next of kin
If only you knew what resided within
I won't let her in
That would be callous and crass
A chip on my chin
You don't want me back
Stuck in the dirt
Can you tell that she's hurt?
So sharp and alert
She's such a clean breed
Stuck in the mud
I'm a ghost that I was
A sister of her
And I'm all the same Creed
I'll never give in
How could I apprise you with all that she's sinned
She feels like hell and I know 'cause I've been
I won't let her in
That would be callous and crass
A chip on my chin
You don't want me back
I won't let her in
That would be callous and crass
A chip on my chin
You don't want me back
The lyrics to Houses and Homes' song "Sister" speak of a complicated relationship between two siblings. The first stanza suggests a level of discomfort and tension with lines like "And I choked on a thread / Fist in a ball." The second stanza introduces the idea of a twin, who is "standing aside" but is still connected to the singer. However, the singer asserts that they won't let the twin in, as there is too much pain and history there. The third stanza uses the metaphor of being "stuck in the dirt" to express the weight of this relationship. The singer ends with the repeated refrain that they won't let the twin in, highlighting the strength of their boundary.
Overall, the lyrics of "Sister" convey a sense of conflict and unresolved feelings. The singer is torn between their loyalty to their twin and the need to protect themselves from whatever pain or damage that relationship has caused. The repeated refrain of "I won't let her in" suggests a determination to maintain a certain level of distance, despite any feelings of guilt or obligation.

Heart in my hand
I am holding my heart and feeling vulnerable
We've broken the bread
We have shared a meal together, creating a bond
And I choked on a thread
Something got caught in my throat and I struggled to breathe
Again and again
This keeps happening to me
Fist in a ball
I am angry and frustrated
My arms as they haul
I am pulling away from you
Away from your body
I am distancing myself physically
Away from your skin
I am avoiding touching you
You see, that's my twin
I have a sister who looks just like me
She's standing aside and she's my next of kin
My sister is next in line after me to receive my inheritance
If only you knew what resided within
You don't know the depth of my pain and struggles
I won't let her in
I won't allow my sister's problems to affect me
That would be callous and crass
It would be insensitive and inappropriate
A chip on my chin
I am tough and won't be broken easily
You don't want me back
You don't want to reconcile with me
Stuck in the dirt
My sister is struggling and can't move forward
Can you tell that she's hurt?
Do you see the pain she's going through?
So sharp and alert
Despite her struggles, my sister remains sharp and aware
She's such a clean breed
My sister is pure-hearted and innocent
Stuck in the mud
I am also struggling and stuck
I'm a ghost that I was
I feel like a ghost of my former self
A sister of her
My sister and I are siblings
And I'm all the same Creed
We share the same beliefs and values
I'll never give in
I won't yield or submit to the pain
How could I apprise you with all that she's sinned
How can I express to you all the wrong my sister has done?
She feels like hell and I know 'cause I've been
I understand how my sister feels because I've been through the same struggles
I won't let her in
I won't allow my sister's problems to affect me
That would be callous and crass
It would be insensitive and inappropriate
A chip on my chin
I am tough and won't be broken easily
You don't want me back
You don't want to reconcile with me
