Conversation With The Wind
Houston Calls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stepping off the ledge
She looks at me and says
Hey Tommy can I spend the night
And wake up in your eyes

Of course you can, timidly answered,
But beware I can't promise much
Not at this time in my life

Watching trees change
Just like your ways
You're in my arms for the last time
Pressed together
My heart's weathered
Now we will sleep for the last time

I build you up and break myself down
How can I sit there while some clown
Namely me
Sets you up for a loss

First of all I'm insecure
And number two I can't be there for you
Not at this time in my life

How can I hear your call in this windy night

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Houston Calls' song "Conversation with the Wind" depict a conversation between two individuals, referred to as Tommy and the singer's love interest. The song begins with the singer being asked by their love interest if they can spend the night and wake up together. Tommy, feeling unsure and unable to promise much due to the circumstances in his life, timidly agrees.

As they watch the trees change, symbolizing the passage of time and their own changing ways, the singer realizes that this moment is the last time they will be in each other's arms. Emotionally worn and weathered, they acknowledge that they will sleep together for the last time. The lyrics then express the singer's realization that they have been building up their love interest while breaking themselves down. They feel insecure and incapable of being there for their love interest, confessing that they can't meet their needs at this point in their life.

The final line of the song, "How can I hear your call in this windy night," serves as a metaphor for the difficulty of deciphering their love interest's true desires or intentions amidst the chaos and uncertainty surrounding them.

Overall, the lyrics explore themes of insecurity, the inability to fully commit, and the realization that sometimes love cannot be sustained due to personal circumstances.

Ever hear their remake of Conversations with the Wind, in C? PLEASE tell me you have, it seems like the kind of thing that would have inspired this. I'm glad to know that at least someone else was a fan of this amazing band. I went to every show they played here in Portland (5 or so, total), and they're the only band I've gone out of my way to see. I don't like your version as much as I do theirs, but it's a lot to stack up against. So not bad.

tight! similarly. can you join me at trying music cooperations utilizing Bandhub! I typically like playing acoustic bass. You and I could make music at some point! It could be excellent!
