THE RETREAT FROM OSGILIATH
text by PHILIPPA BOYENS, translation by DAVID SALO
( SINDARIN )

Revail vyrn dan minuial
Ú galad, ú vin anor hen
Cano an dregad.
Ú natha ored
Gwanwen ost in giliath
Dannen Osgiliath

(( Black wings against a pale morning
There is no more light, not in this sun
Call the retreat.
There will be no warning.
The citadel of the stars is gone
Osgiliath is fallen. ))

THE WHITE RIDER

(( Their race was over;
All courage gone.

A light shone in the West -
The White Rider had come. ))

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Howard Shore's song Osgiliath Invaded, written by Philippa Boyens with translation by David Salo, are a haunting depiction of the fall of Osgiliath, an ancient city in Middle-earth, during the War of the Ring. The first stanza describes the arrival of the Nazgul, the dark and powerful servants of the evil Sauron. Their black wings cast a shadow against the morning light, signifying the darkness that has engulfed the land. The city's defenders are overwhelmed, and the retreat is called. The imagery of the citadel of the stars falling emphasizes the devastation and loss of hope that has occurred.
