Collide
Howie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The dawn is breaking
A light shining through
You're barely waking
And I'm tangled up in you
Yeah

(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)

I'm open, you're closed
Where I follow, you'll go
I worry I won't see your face
Light up again

Even the best fall down sometime
Even the wrong words seem to rhyme
Out of the doubt that fills my mind
I somehow find
You and I collide

(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)

I'm quiet you know
You make a first impression
I've found I'm scared to know I'm always on your mind

Even the best fall down sometimes
Even the stars refuse to shine
Out of the back you fall in time
I somehow find
You and I collide

Don't stop here
I lost my place
I'm close behind

(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)

Even the best fall down sometimes
Even the wrong words seem to rhyme
Out of the doubt that fills your mind
You finally find
You and I collide

(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)

Finally find
You and I collide
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
You finally find
You and I collide

(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)
(Do do do do)

(Do do do do)
(Do do do)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Howie Day's song, "Collide," evoke a sense of intimacy and vulnerability in a relationship. The opening lines describe the break of dawn with a metaphorical light that shines through a character who is still groggy and half-awake. The "you" mentioned is likely his lover, whom he finds himself tangled up with. The contrast between the "open" narrator and the "closed" lover shows that they have different ways of expressing themselves, but still they follow each other. The singer admits that they worry they won't see the other's face light up again, indicating that their relationship is on the rocks but that they still have hope for a brighter future.

The chorus emphasizes the idea that even the best people make mistakes or have hardships, but they can still come together and find harmony. The lyrics suggest that the couple doesn't always have perfect moments, but they can still find a way to make things work. The second verse takes on a similar tone, as the singer reveals that they are typically quiet around their lover, but are still scared to think that they're always on the other's mind. It seems like there is a mutual fear and uncertainty in the relationship, but as the title suggests, they will ultimately collide.

In the final chorus, the singer urges their partner to not stop and reminds them that they are close behind. The song ends with a repetition of the lines "you finally find, you and I collide," emphasizing that despite the obstacles they may face, the couple will eventually come together.

I'm with ya. I actually met him in person right after I learned to play this song on my guitar. He performed in Alexandria Virginia at a concert venue that I was working at called The Birchmere. He's so down to earth. I was smoking a cigarette and he came outside to the smoking area. ā¤
