Howling Bells Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm falling through the air
No escape from this place
I just need to cry
One more time, 'cause tears won't hold forever
With the noise gone
I'm chasing lullabies
I watch, and it's no surprise
Time is still, and my heart won't hold forever
Still can't see
Even when the lights are high
That's my mind chasing time
To stay alive
These eyes have opened for the first time
And I
I can't run away
From myself
Like yesterday
And I
I'll change my ways
Someday
Someday soon
All the lights stopped flashing red
This time I can run to the noise instead
These eyes have opened for the first time
And I
I can't run away
From myself
Like yesterday
And I
I'll change my ways
Someday
Someday soon
The lyrics to Howling Bells's song "In The Woods" depicts a feeling of being lost or trapped in a place where one's emotions are overwhelming. The opening lines, "With the lights low, I'm falling through the air, No escape from this place, I just need to cry one more time, 'cause tears won't hold forever" suggest a disorienting sense of free-fall or surrender. The singer is stuck in a place that they cannot escape from, and they are overwhelmed with intense emotions, perhaps pain or sorrow.
As the song progresses, the singer notes that "with the noise gone, I'm chasing lullabies, always fading, I watch, and it's no surprise, time is still, and my heart won't hold forever." The noise and chaos of the world is absent, and instead the singer is left alone with haunting lullabies that are fading away. The passage of time is also noted here, with the singer recognizing that their heart cannot hold on to these intense emotions forever.
The concluding lines of the song show a hint of optimism, with the singer stating that "all the lights stopped flashing red, this time I can run to the noise instead, these eyes have opened for the first time, and I, I'll change my ways someday, someday soon". The flashing "red lights" of the previous verses have stopped, and the singer can take refuge in noise and life. They have also opened their eyes for the first time, indicating a new perspective or sense of clarity. The final lines suggest that they will change their ways and that they can hope for a better future.
