From Eden
Hozier Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Babe
There's something tragic about you
Something so magic about you
Don't you agree?

Babe
There's something lonesome about you
Something so wholesome about you
Get closer to me

No tired sighs, no rolling eyes, no irony
No 'who cares', no vacant stares, no time for me

Honey, you're familiar like my mirror years ago
Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword
Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know
I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door

Babe
There's something wretched about this
Something so precious about this
Where to begin?

Babe
There's something broken about this
But I might be hoping about this
Oh, what a sin

To the strand a picnic plan for you and me
A rope in hand for your other man to hang from a tree

Honey, you're familiar like my mirror years ago
Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword
Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know
I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door

Honey, you're familiar like my mirror years ago
Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword

Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know
I slithered here from Eden just to hide outside your door

Overall Meaning

Hozier's song "From Eden" is an intricate piece laden with poetic imagery and metaphors that add depth to the lyrics. The song is mostly about a romantic relationship that is plagued by various issues like loneliness and vulnerability. The opening stanza sets the tone for the track, with Hozier addressing his lover and expressing his observation about her personality. He marvels at her tragic and magic nature, urging her to agree with him. The second stanza invites her to draw closer to him and highlights the need for intimacy and a connection that doesn't involve pretentiousness, sarcasm, or aloofness.

The following stanzas delve deeper into the dynamics of the relationship, where Hozier uses metaphorical language to paint a vivid picture of the turmoil his lover is going through. He likens her to a prisoner and notes how idealism and chivalry have been brought down by circumstances. He also speaks of how innocence has died screaming, a clear reference to the pain and anguish that his lover has endured. Hozier himself is portrayed as someone who is willing to do anything to be with his lover, even crawling back to Eden just to be near her. The final stanza delves into the darker themes of the song, with Hozier singing about a picnic plan that ends in someone being hanged by a tree.

Right now I am going through the hardest time in my life. June 30 my daughter Eden was born and had surgery at 2 days old, now diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. She is 3 weeks now. I can't tell you how many times I have listened to this song. I know it has a meaning that you intended for it but for me it means so much more especially right now.

"Babe, there's something wretched about this
Something so precious about this
Oh what a sin"

Her diagnosis is so horrible , yet she is the sweetest bundle of joy
She is so pure and happy and content while I'm over here falling apart

I just wanted to share to let you know how powerful this song has been for me through this

"We can't leave this kid here. Look at him." Eve gestured at the kid, who was staring up at them with large brown eyes.
Jesus, thought Adam, I've seen cows with smaller eyes.
"We aren't bringing him, Eve. The last thing I need is a kidnapping charge."
"Are you fucking kidding me? This kid is getting the life beaten out of him and you're worried about a fucking kidnapping charge?"
"Those bruises could be from an accident, Eve. He's a kid. Stuff like that happens all the time."
Eve glared at him. "You don't even believe that. I can see it in your eyes. You know just as well as I do that bruises like that aren't made by an accident."
Adam tried again.
"He'll just slow us down, Eve. Besides, how is dragging him into a life of crime any better than leaving him here?"
"Because at least then he'll have a chance. Please, Adam."
Eve gave him a look that made Adam want to kick himself. She was right, and they both knew it.
In the distance, Adam could hear the sirens of the police. They had to leave.
Letting out an aggravated sigh, he knelt down and started to scoop up the boy in his arms.
The kid squirmed and sank his teeth into Adam's hand, right in the fleshy part of his thumb.
"Fucking Christ!" swore Adam, dropping him and yanking his hand protectively to his chest. "The little bastard bit me!"
The boy darted away and hid behind Eve, who was roaring with laughter.
"Grab the kid," growled Adam, "before I change my mind."
Eve gently picked up the boy, who smiled and buried his face into her dark hair.
"You're going home, little buddy," Eve said quietly.

Four Years Later
The police had come.
Adam's worst fears were coming true. He could hear them, pounding on the door.
"This is Officer Rivera! I have a warrant for your arrest for kidnapping Sam Ericson! Open this door!"
Eve was looking at him, holding Sam close to her. They were both huddled against the wall so if the cops looked in they wouldn't see them.
Adam swallowed as he realized what he had to do. Eve knew it too; tears were gently streaming from her eyes.
Adam kissed Eve one last time and ruffled Sam's hair.
"Look after her, kid. I'll be back soon," he said, trying to sound more upbeat than he felt.
Adam walked over to the door and opened it.
The police were ready for him.
