Nobody
Hozier Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know when it's twelve o'clock in Soho, baby
It's gin o'clock where I wake up, I don't know
And I think about you though, everywhere I go
And I've done everythin' and I've been everywhere, you know

I've been fed gold by sweet fools in Abu Dhabi
And I've danced real slow with Rockettes on dodgy molly
But I've had no love like your love, ooh, from nobody
I'd be appalled if I saw you ever try to be a saint
I wouldn't fall for someone I thought couldn't misbehave
But I want you to know that I've had no love like your love

Honey, when you warm the bed on Wednesday (yeah)
It's suicide Tuesday back in LA
If I had the choice between hearing either noise
The excitement of a thousand, or the soothing of your voice

At first chance, I'd take the bed warmed by the body, woo
I once warmed my hands over a burning Maserati, woo

Still I've had no love like your love, oh, from nobody
I'd be appalled if I saw you ever try to be a saint
I wouldn't fall for someone I thought couldn't misbehave
But I want you to know that I've had no love like your love

And on the other side, why should we deny the truth?

We could have less to worry about, honey, I won't lie to you
But everything I do, I've had no love like your love

Overall Meaning

In Hozier's song "Nobody," the singer reflects on his experiences traveling the world and indulging in various pleasures, but despite all this, he admits that he has never experienced love like the one he has with the person he's singing to. The lyrics are filled with vivid imagery and references to different locations and experiences that the singer has had. He mentions that it's "gin o'clock" where he wakes up, suggesting a time zone difference between where he is and the person he misses. He also refers to being in Abu Dhabi and receiving gold from "sweet fools," as well as dancing with the Rockettes on "dodgy molly." These lines paint a picture of someone who has lived a wild and exciting life but ultimately comes to the conclusion that love is what truly matters.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "I'm nobody," which can be interpreted in a few different ways. It could be read as the singer feeling insignificant without the love of the person they're singing to. It could also be seen as a reflection on how all the experiences and pleasures he's had mean nothing compared to the love he's been able to experience. The line "I'd be appalled if I saw you ever try to be a saint" suggests that the singer's love interest may have a rebellious streak that he's attracted to. He wouldn't want them to be anyone other than who they are. The final lines of the song acknowledge the distance between the singer and the person they're singing to, but he still emphasizes how much he's never experienced love like theirs.

The actual lyrics (since everybody seems to have posted the same incorrect ones):
[Verse 1]
You know when it's twelve o'clock in Soho, baby
It's gin o'clock where I wake up, I don't know
And I think about you though, everywhere I go
And I've done everythin' and I've been everywhere, you know

[Pre-Chorus]
I've been fed gold by sweet fools in Abu Dhabi
And I've danced real slow with Rockettes on dodgy molly

[Chorus]
But I've had no love like your love, ooh, from nobody
I'd be appalled if I saw you ever try to be a saint
I wouldn't fall for someone I thought couldn't misbehave
But I want you to know that I've had no love like your love

[Verse 2]
Honey, when you warm the bed on Wednesday
It's suicide Tuesday back in LA
If I had the choice between hearing either noise
The excitement of a thousand, or the soothing of your voice

[Pre-Chorus]
At first chance, I'd take the bed warmed by the body, woo
I once warmed my hands over a burnin' Maserati, woo

[Chorus]
Still I've had no love like your love from nobody
I'd be appalled if I saw you ever try to be a saint
I wouldn't fall for someone I thought couldn't misbehave
But I want you to know that I've had no love like your love

[Outro]
And on the other side, why should we deny the truth?
We could have less to worry about, honey, I won't lie to you
But everything I do, I've had no love like your love

@beeboy57

wow can't believe that hozier wrote all his songs about good omens. every single one. from eden? nobody? would that I? no plan? almost? like real people do? literally any other hozier song/cover done by him? every fucking one of them is just about crowley and aziraphale pining and/or being in love and i respect the dedication honestly

edit: since I can't stop thinking about it, here's some examples from this song alone. I apologize in advance I just really love hozier and good omens and its almost 3am and my brain is going w i l d.

-"you know when it's twelve o'clock in Soho, baby/it's gin o'clock where I'll wake up" crowley misses aziraphale, but they fought and he's too stubborn and bad with emotions to apologize, so he's coping very badly by drinking and sleeping constantly. the entire goddamn 19th century, anyone?
-"and I think about you though everywhere I go/and I've done everything and I've been everywhere, you know" I mean, both parts of this are essentially true. you can't hang out with someone for six thousand years and a) not think about them constantly or b) experience a whole lot of shit together, as is talked about in the next four lines
-"but I've had no love like your love/ooh from nobody" sadly, that is also essentially true. heaven hates crowley, god refuses to listen, and hell only barely tolerates him. aziraphale radiates love, and is also the only other person in the universe who comes close to understanding what he's been through, so yeah
-"i'd be appalled if I saw you ever try to be a saint/I wouldn't fall for someone I thought couldn't misbehave" remember the whole 'just enough of a bastard to be worth knowing' thing? yeah.
-"and on the other side, why should we deny the truth?/we could have less to worry about, honey, I won't lie to you" crowley is constantly trying to convince aziraphale that they are on their own side, that he can trust him, that the arrangement and/or basically saying 'fuck you' to their respective sides will make it so their life on earth is easier. aziraphale is denying the truth by claiming they aren't friends, or that they're still opposing forces. that train left the station long, long ago, my friend.

and on that note I'm done rambling. no one's gonna see this comment and tbh I'm fine with that :)
