Hozier was born in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. His mother is the visual artist Raine Hozier-Byrne (who also designed his latest album cover). He began a degree in music at Trinity College, Dublin, but dropped out midway through his first year in order to record demos for Universal Music. While at Trinity, he became involved with the Trinity Orchestra. He was a member of Anúna from 2008 to 2012, and appears as a soloist on their 2012 release "Illumination" singing "La Chanson de Mardi Gras". He toured and sang with the group internationally including performances in Norway and the Netherlands.
In 2013, Hozier released the EP "Take Me to Church EP" (also containing "Like Real People Do", "Angel of Small Death and The Codeine Scene" and a live version of "Cherry Wine"), with the title track becoming his breakthrough single after it went viral on YouTube. It reached number one on the Irish iTunes singles chart and number two in the official chart on 25 October 2013.
Hozier followed up Take Me to Church with the new EP "From Eden EP" (also containing "Work Song", "Arsonist's Lullabye" and a live version of "To Be Alone"), and a number of festival tour dates and television appearances in the United States. Hozier released his self-titled album, "Hozier" on 19 September 2014. It had five singles including "Take Me to Church", "Work Song", and "From Eden", which were hits on his earlier EPs. On December 2014, it was announced that "Take Me to Church" was nominated at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards for Song of the Year in 2015.
In September 2018, he released an EP titled Nina Cried Power and featured the title track as a single, reaching number one on the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart. He released his second album, Wasteland, Baby! in March 2019, which debuted atop the Irish Albums Chart and the Billboard 200, and has since been certified gold in the U.S.

Who would trade that hum of night for
Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
But whose heart would not take flight
Betray the moon as acolyte
On first and fierce affirming sight
Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
Flew like a moth to you, sunlight oh sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight (sunlight, sunlight)
But it is sunlight
All the tales the same
Told before and told again
A soul that's born in cold and rain knows
Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
At last can grant a name
To a buried and a burning flame
As love and its decisive pain, oh my
Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
All that was shown to me, sunlight
Was something foreknown to me, sunlight oh sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight (sunlight, sunlight)
But it is sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight (sunlight, sunlight)
But it is sunlight, sunlight
All these colors fade for you
Hold me, carry me slowly, my sunlight
All these colors fade for you
Hold me, carry me slowly, my sunlight
Each day you'd rise with me
Know that I would gladly be
The Icarus to your certainty
Oh my sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
Strap the wing to me
Death trap clad happily
With wax melted, I'd meet the sea
Under sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight (sunlight, sunlight)
But it is sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight (sunlight, sunlight)
But it is sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight (sunlight, sunlight)
But it is sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight
Oh, your love is sunlight (sunlight, sunlight)
But it is sunlight
Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
The lyrics to Hozier's "Sunlight" are a beautiful exploration of love and its many facets. The song opens with the singer declaring that he would rather shun the light and embrace the cool, quiet evening than bask in sunlight. However, as the song goes on, he begins to realize that his heart cannot resist the allure of the sun's warmth and light. He uses beautiful metaphors and comparisons to describe the power of love, stating that it "betrays the moon as acolyte" and can "grant a name to a buried and burning flame".
The second verse explores the idea that all the tales of love are the same, but that doesn't make it any less powerful or meaningful. The singer reflects that his love for his partner was foreknown to him, and that he sees it as a form of sunlight that illuminates his life. He repeats the phrase "your love is sunlight" throughout the chorus, acknowledging that while love can be painful and intense, it is ultimately a force for good in his life.
In the final verse, the singer expresses his willingness to take risks and even face death for the sake of his beloved. He likens himself to Icarus, the figure from Greek mythology who flew too close to the sun and plummeted to his death. Despite the potential dangers, the singer is willing to strap on wings and soar towards the light, knowing that his partner's love will be with him all the way.
Overall, "Sunlight" is a powerful anthem to the transformative power of love.

Hey, I would shun the light
Sharin' evenings cool and quiet
Who betrayed that I'm the night
For sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
But his heart would not take flight
Betray the moon as acolyte
I'm first and fierce if I'm in sight
Of sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
I have been lost in sunlight
Flew like a moth to you, sunlight, oh, sunlight
All we love is sunlight
All we love is sunlight
But it is sunlight
All the titles the same
Told before and told again
Soul that's born in cold and rain
Oh, sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
At last, came burgeoning
To bury it in a burning flame
It's love and it's decisive pain
Oh, my sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
All that was shown to me, sunlight
There's somethin' foreknown to me, sunlight, oh sunlight
All we love is sunlight
All we love is sunlight
But it is sunlight
All we love is sunlight
All we love is sunlight
But it is sunlight, sunlight
Ooh, and these colors fade for you
Hold me, carry me slowly, my sunlight
Ooh, and these colors fade for you
Hold me, carry me slowly, my sunlight
Each day, you rise with me
Know that I would gladly be
The eucharist to your certainty
Oh, my sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
You strap the weight of me
A death trap clad happily
With wax melted, I need to see
Under sunlight, sunlight, sunlight
All we love is sunlight
All we love is sunlight
But it is sunlight
All we love is sunlight
All we love is sunlight
But it is sunlight
All we love is sunlight
All we love is sunlight
