Take Me
Hozier Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My lover's got humor
She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshiped her sooner
If the Heavens ever did speak
She's the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
"We were born sick", you heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me, "Worship in the bedroom"
The only Heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well
A, Amen, Amen, Amen

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
Drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

No masters or kings when the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness, in the soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean
Oh, oh, Amen, Amen, Amen

Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife

Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

Overall Meaning

In Hozier's "Take Me to Church," the singer describes a passionate and intense love affair with a woman who is the subject of widespread disapproval. The song uses religious imagery and themes to contrast the singer's love with the oppressive and judgmental atmosphere of organized religion. The opening lines describe the woman's sense of humor and her tendency to mock authority (she's the "giggle at a funeral," for example), as well as the singer's regret that he didn't "worship" her sooner.

The second verse continues to contrast the woman's personality with the oppressive nature of traditional religion. The singer repeats the phrase "We were born sick," which he suggests might be a phrase he's heard from a preacher or religious leader. However, he rejects the idea that his love is sinful or immoral, despite what the church might say. He describes his lover's advice to "worship in the bedroom," suggesting that their passion and intimacy is their own form of spiritual connection. The chorus then repeats, with the singer offering himself up to his lover and asking her to take him to a place where he can fully give himself to her.

The final verse continues to use religious imagery to describe the singer's relationship with his lover. He rejects the idea that there are any "masters or kings" in their relationship – it's simply two people sharing a deep connection. The reference to "gentle sin" suggests that their love may not be sanctioned by established religious institutions, but it is still pure and meaningful to them. The final lines repeat the "Amen" chorus, as if to assert that this form of love is its own kind of spiritual experience.

It's not even about sexuality. Here is a direct quote so stop saying what you think it's about without researching.

Lyrically the song is one large metaphor comparing a lover to religion.

"Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life."

Speaking with The Irish Times, Hozier said about matters of the heart: "I found the experience of falling in love or being in love was a death, a death of everything. You kind of watch yourself die in a wonderful way, and you experience for the briefest moment – if you see yourself for a moment through their eyes – everything you believed about yourself gone. In a death-and-rebirth sense."

Jesus says to love everyone as your self and not to judge one another....
for God is Judge.....

if you say this song isnt Christian.....then that means you agree with the video and the Violent things they did to the guy?

ROMANS 14:10-23
10 But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you also look down on your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God;

11 for it is written: “‘As I live,’ says Jehovah,* ‘to me every knee will bend down, and every tongue will make open acknowledgment to God.’”
12 So, then, each of us will render an account for himself to God.*

13 Therefore let us not be judging+ one another any longer, but rather make this YOUR decision, not to put before a brother a stumbling block or a cause for tripping.

14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is defiled in itself; only where a man considers something to be defiled, to him it is defiled.

15 For if because of food your brother is being grieved, you are no longer walking in accord with love. Do not by your food ruin that one for whom Christ died.
16 Do not, therefore, let the good YOU people do be spoken of with injury to YOU.
17 For the kingdom of God does not mean* eating and drinking, but [means]* righteousness and peace and joy with holy spirit.
18 For he who in this regard slaves for Christ is acceptable to God and has approval with men.
19 So, then, let us pursue the things making for peace and the things that are upbuilding to one another.
20 Stop tearing down the work of God just for the sake of food. True, all things are clean, but it is injurious to the man who with an occasion for stumbling eats.
21 It is well not to eat flesh or to drink wine or do anything over which your brother stumbles.
22 The faith that you have, have it in accord with yourself in the sight of God. Happy is the man that does not put himself on judgment by what he approves.
23 But if he has doubts, he is already condemned if he eats, because [he does] not [eat] out of faith. Indeed, everything that is not out of faith is sin.

@MomijiHyuga804

How did they react?

@Aya_Raad405

MomijiHyuga804 she airplanes the lyrics on the screen and once it got to the chorus she was like “hang on, I don’t understand this part.” Then the girl was like, it’s ok we’ll explain it at the end.” She told us to stop air playing before the song ended and then we had this whole debate about it putting out the wrong ideas on Catholics. And some girl was like “yeah, but half the people don’t even care about what the song is about, if it’s a good song then it doesn’t really matter.” Then the bell went.

@suisaip

Girl GamerX5 but not "literally".
