Hozier was born in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. His mother is the visual artist Raine Hozier-Byrne (who also designed his latest album cover). He began a degree in music at Trinity College, Dublin, but dropped out midway through his first year in order to record demos for Universal Music. While at Trinity, he became involved with the Trinity Orchestra. He was a member of Anúna from 2008 to 2012, and appears as a soloist on their 2012 release "Illumination" singing "La Chanson de Mardi Gras". He toured and sang with the group internationally including performances in Norway and the Netherlands.

In 2013, Hozier released the EP "Take Me to Church EP" (also containing "Like Real People Do", "Angel of Small Death and The Codeine Scene" and a live version of "Cherry Wine"), with the title track becoming his breakthrough single after it went viral on YouTube. It reached number one on the Irish iTunes singles chart and number two in the official chart on 25 October 2013.

Hozier followed up Take Me to Church with the new EP "From Eden EP" (also containing "Work Song", "Arsonist's Lullabye" and a live version of "To Be Alone"), and a number of festival tour dates and television appearances in the United States. Hozier released his self-titled album, "Hozier" on 19 September 2014. It had five singles including "Take Me to Church", "Work Song", and "From Eden", which were hits on his earlier EPs. On December 2014, it was announced that "Take Me to Church" was nominated at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards for Song of the Year in 2015.

In September 2018, he released an EP titled Nina Cried Power and featured the title track as a single, reaching number one on the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart. He released his second album, Wasteland, Baby! in March 2019, which debuted atop the Irish Albums Chart and the Billboard 200, and has since been certified gold in the U.S.

Just wanted to say thanks for the video! - I''ve had a go at the code and would like to submit my version for your thoughts / critique (or others reading this??!) . It's an attempt to address some of the points raised in the comments when it comes to refreshing the data only at service restart. This variation scrapes the data now each time 'news' is called.

There are a few other tweaks I've done - commented in my code, as someone mentioned using the URL() function which I've added too.

I'm still learning JS and really don't think the way that my version tracks updates to return the data is the correct way, I'm guessing this is something to do with how async functions work :( - hence after a little feedback.

Great tutorial on creating API, but I don’t think news websites will be happy about scrapers that earn money from it. You should either rely on other APIs or get permission to scrape data for commercial use.

Why in "/:newspaperId" route you make a new axios get request instead of filtering matching results from the existing articles array based on provided ID in params?

@Janis S As you say, crawling time is the crucial factor. That is why such an api would make absolutely no sense in a real world usecase - other than pre-crawled, pre-indexed, data sets that are kept in a search ready state in some kind of database or whatever.

Think of google. The process described is exactly what they do. Get an inventory at timepoint (x), which you can then search in.

As a good rule of thumb, if things are normally not changed in "real time" as in live data feeds, it is generally fine to take snapshots in defined intervals. Time between snapshots is then defined heavily by your ressources (money, time, complexity, etc) but also by the change intervals of the data itself.

@Monsieur Longbow thanks! Though is web crawling service and reading data from DB comparable? Making multiple requests from client side, depending on how many resources need to be crawled, will for sure affect performance on FE and increase waiting / data fetching time? This project is specifically about creating a web crawler. So my initial guess was that it's missing some sort of middleware service that would store crawled data in somewhere, and only after it would be retrieved by REST api.

I'm not a backend dev, therefore trying to better understand this solution. It gives ideas for some fun projects, but I'm not sure how this would scale up :)

that is just there to mock any kind of database or whatever where you would pull your articles from, having those properly preindexed does allow you to "crawl" within reasonable time

especially if you can access via uniq id, you are looking at a binary tree which gives you O(log n) search time

@Monsieur Longbowyes of course. But then filtering can be done before requesting the specific endpoint? For me it seems it would be too much pressure on the service if on requesting each endpoint, new crawling needs to be executed. Or maybe I just miss something? :)

When doing the :newspaperId section, couldn't we just filter the articles array instead of filter/find on the newspapers array? That way we wouldn't be using time and resources to duplicate the effort if we already have all the articles

.filter() actually returns the object (which matches search criteria), So no need to run the filter again. Just get whichever property you want from that object.

One question for you, how would you save those results in firebase or any other type of db, so they don't get lost?

And how would you then make an API from that mentioned db so they all there no matter the date?

If you want also, you can use an the date() method that gives you the current date, and store all of the information you’ve gathered based on date and other specifications. If you’d like to store all of the data regardless of date, you can simply combine everything that you scraped into an object of objects/arrays, and when you finally decide that you need to pull up any of that data regardless of date, you can always store the date along with that data so that you can search for it when needed.

Once you have the data that you need, you can create some code to filter out exactly what you want and store it in a hash/object or an array, or an object-array. Then, instead of creating yet another API, you can create some more code that displays the information that you want Rather than having the API’s display the information immediately.

Nice idea, however, you should consider test automation for the data source scheme changes, and the second point is the site will register frequent access they may start blocking (which may even happen automatically by AWS routing services), which will have impact on "your API"s availabiliy, resulting in bad reviews.

Besides: I know it's an example but she should have pointed out that this api is in now way legal to run and even provide via public api considering all the newspaper outlets own copyright to these articles.

Very informative, there was a few packages I didn't know :) Don't you have a problem with the articles getting out of date? Or does Heroku restart your app at certain intervals? Otherwise you have an array that is populated only when the server starts. The other endpoints are alright, but you might run into IP blocking if your API become too popular. The best would be to load the articles at regular intervals and only filter them for each endpoint.

I am currently using this API for a static front end website I have build to fetch this API.
It has been working just fine this past few days and today when I was visiting the website to check how it's going, it crashed out of the blue ! I thought it was a problem with my back end code, so I just downloaded your code form your repository, installed the dependencies with npm i, and then npm run start, and crashes directly downloading it from your repository so it should work... since my code was also working previously and this happened so suddenly, I was wondering.. could it be that something external is crashing making it crash locally? I am trying to understand where things went wrong. If you get to see this question Thank you !!!

Great video, just one question though, since you are doing the data fetching outside of endpoints, wouldn't it go ahead and fetch the data from sources once the server is up and running and from that point it will just give outdated data if you never restart your backend? More logical thing would be putting the fetch logic in a setInterval() which would be called lets say every hour so you would return more up to date data once your endpoints get hit.

It fetches data on the "/news" route, so each time that API is hit at that endpoint, it will fetch from the news sources. If anything, you could add a shared cache layer to serve new requests, invalidating/refreshing on some interval.

Really great video, never thought of this. Only issue I can see would be the policies of these newspaper sites being scraped. Many already have their own form of API already or probably forbid others from storing their data like this.

This was intended to be an educational video and web scraping is a quick way to achieve that. When you create your own API, you are responsible for making sure that you are legally able to do what you intend your API to do which is beyond the scope of this tutorial.

Been a front end dev for five years and one year of back end on ServiceNow. I had no idea this was how you built an API. I've always used the api data, but never knew how it was built. I am surprised at how easy it is with express. Maybe not easy for beginners. I have some basic tutorials on my channel but this is nice. Just as good, if not better than a Udemy course.

Realistically this is an extremely simple API with a majority of the heavy lifting API aspects handled by RapidAPI.

This is more just creating requests that a custom API is using to return data, it's not building an API itself

And I'm not saying this like it's a problem, but just want you to know that you probably shouldn't get API development confused with endpoint building that an API then uses

Callbacks, promises, GET, POST, these are not beginner level aspects. Express makes this easier obviously.

In my world, (embedded) audio processing, API has a much broader meaning. In our terminology these are 'Web APIs' usually in the form of a REST API.
It is so weird to me that this seems the new norm for a large group of ppl, for a few years now.. like there is no other kind.
I talk about apis every day, but only seldom while referring to a web api, we really have to specify 'web' otherwise ppl I talk to, colleagues/clients/managers/friends.., will assume a different kind.
I have never even talked to a person who leaves of 'web' in this way, and yet.. so weird.
I wonder, when you talk e.g. about the quality of the design of an api of a library, how would you express that?

In addition, don't forget you can take advantage of communicating with subprocesses in the OS (for things that run at that level), take deeper advantage of collaborative multitasking, and use queueing data structures to stash highly blocking requests that you might not want to store as pure javascript objects in case your application crashes/has bugs.

There are no specific laws that do not permit web scraping/crawling...... and as long as you are not simply copying the "presentation" of publicly available data, e.g. cloning a web site and reusing it for commercial purposes, then you are not in breach of copyright laws either. One might also add that the scraped data links back to the source, so all credit is given. If anything, such an API will drive traffic TO the scraped sites, honestly can't see who'd complain about that :)

okay i cant lie, I was a bit sceptical about your video quality, but this is just beyond helpful. Its so easy to follow and understand like I hate js but this motivates me to use javascript. Thank you for this tutorial and amazing idea.

This is a very straight forward and simple tutorial, however I do have some remarks. First of all, why would you write a REST API in JS? It would seem more appropriate to do so in Java for example. Also, you didn't write any test, which is too bad, as this was a good opportunity to show new developers the importance of writing tests. How do you proof your code does what it intends to do?

On the actual API then, why would you scrape websites when they are always subject to change. If one of the newspapers change their website design, your API will break. Probably those newpapers provide APIs you could integrate yourself, to prevent this from happening.

Your code could also be slightly improved. I saw you calling a filter method on an array twice, instead of reusing it. Think of performance when writing publicly available APIs, and definitely when you have a paid model for it.

Besides from the above, I understand this has been developed in an educational context. The tutorial was clear and concise this way. However, in its current form I wouldn't recommend anyone integrating this API in their application.

@David Levai Just because something is "publicly available" doesn't mean it's not copyrighted. In fact, this has been a massive debate in the US over the past 3-5 years... But here's a rundown on your social media content: if you own the photo (if you're the one who took it or you're the one who paid for someone to take it and have purchased the rights to that content), it is absolutely illegal for you to scrape that data and sell it. However, I will say good luck fighting large companies on that kind of stuff... They'll typically just run you through courts until you don't have any money left to fight it, unfortunately. I hope this helps :)

Really good simple tutorial on how to use Cheerio to Scrape pages and Setup an API Endpoint, straight to the point. Kudos to that!

One concern I have is that if Scraping the data from these pages are legal or not?

You have to be careful, it's bit of a grey area. Your scaping tool should respect the Robots nofollow/index meta tags, and your API should only provide a summary and link to the full content. If your API delivers the full content, or you're making money from someone else's content without their permission, there's always some risk of a lawsuit.

This is very good and touching on how you can add a base if the returned links fall short of it is wonderful, great tutorial. But there are also cases where not all returned links by a newspaper is without baseUrl, if you aren't aware just because you saw only those without and add a base you might be doing more harm to the API because the base will be added to all returned links by the newspaper or site you have scrapped which include the once that already have base and those links will be broken at the expense of those without. So it better to test each page you want to scrape initially to see it's results before compiling them in an array.
