Hozier was born in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. His mother is the visual artist Raine Hozier-Byrne (who also designed his latest album cover). He began a degree in music at Trinity College, Dublin, but dropped out midway through his first year in order to record demos for Universal Music. While at Trinity, he became involved with the Trinity Orchestra. He was a member of Anúna from 2008 to 2012, and appears as a soloist on their 2012 release "Illumination" singing "La Chanson de Mardi Gras". He toured and sang with the group internationally including performances in Norway and the Netherlands.
In 2013, Hozier released the EP "Take Me to Church EP" (also containing "Like Real People Do", "Angel of Small Death and The Codeine Scene" and a live version of "Cherry Wine"), with the title track becoming his breakthrough single after it went viral on YouTube. It reached number one on the Irish iTunes singles chart and number two in the official chart on 25 October 2013.
Hozier followed up Take Me to Church with the new EP "From Eden EP" (also containing "Work Song", "Arsonist's Lullabye" and a live version of "To Be Alone"), and a number of festival tour dates and television appearances in the United States. Hozier released his self-titled album, "Hozier" on 19 September 2014. It had five singles including "Take Me to Church", "Work Song", and "From Eden", which were hits on his earlier EPs. On December 2014, it was announced that "Take Me to Church" was nominated at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards for Song of the Year in 2015.
In September 2018, he released an EP titled Nina Cried Power and featured the title track as a single, reaching number one on the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart. He released his second album, Wasteland, Baby! in March 2019, which debuted atop the Irish Albums Chart and the Billboard 200, and has since been certified gold in the U.S.

Any joy it would bring
Honey, the look of it was as sweet as the sound
Your head tilt back, your funny mouth to the clouds
I couldn't hope to know that song
And all its words wouldn't claim to feel the same
We felt as the first time it was heard
I couldn't name that feeling carried in that voice
You don't have to sing it right
Who could call you wrong?
You put your emptiness to melody
Your awful heart to song
You don't have to sing it nice, but honey sing it strong
At best, you find a little remedy, at worst the world will sing along
So honey sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing
Sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, sing
Remember when you'd sing
Before we moved to it and we'd scuff up our shoes
Honey, the groove of it was whatever you choose
I wan't to be your lover, or the fishermen's blues
You didn't always sing it right
But who could call you wrong?
You put your emptiness to melody
Your awful heart to song
You don't have to sing it nice, but honey sing it strong
At best, you find a little remedy, at worst the world will sing along
So honey sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing
Sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, sing
Who could ask to be unbroken or be brave again?
Or honey hope even on this side of the grave again?
And who could ask it to be sound or to feel saved again?
Or stick around until you hear that music play again
So honey sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing
Sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, sing
So honey sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing
Sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, sing (For the love of it)
Sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing (For the love of it)
Remember when you'd sing, just for the love of it
Any joy it would bring
In "To Noise Making," Hozier encourages us to embrace the joy and freedom that comes with making music. The song is an ode to the simple act of singing for the love of it, without fear of judgment or criticism. The first verse speaks about the sweetness of music and the feeling it brings, even if we cannot express it ourselves. The second verse encourages us to sing even if we are not perfect or polished. The chorus repeats the mantra of singing for the love of it and the power it has to lift our spirits.
The third verse touches on the idea of hope and how music can bring it back to us even in our darkest moments. Hozier encourages us to keep singing and to never give up on the healing power of music. The song ends with a beautiful reminder to never forget the joy that comes from creating something out of nothing, just for the love of it.
Overall, "To Noise Making" is a beautiful and uplifting song that celebrates the power of music to bring us together and heal our hearts.

Do you ever get angry that a lot of activities we do are boiled down to the results we produce? We can't draw just for the heck of it unless we produce a masterpiece. We can't start a podcast with our friends unless we get thousands of listeners. We can't dance randomly unless we're good at it. Why can't we just do things because they make us happy?

As someone who "can't sing" I love this so much. Singing alone in my car makes me so happy anyways.

I bet you can. Singing for an audience or record has its technique, yes, but it's first and foremost about owning your voice and getting in touch with your breath and your emotions.
