Mostly shunned by television and radio, he has built through word of mouth and frequent touring a considerable following over the years, which allowed him to fill the 17,000-seater Palais Omnisport de Bercy for an anniversary concert in 1998. In recent years he has been increasingly name-dropped as an influence by the latest generation of performers in France, and was the subject of a tribute album of covers in 2002. He has been performing since the late 1960s and releasing records since 1978.
His parents sent him to a catholic boarding school. He spent few years there, where being singled out by his schoolmates started to be interested in great poets (such as Rimbaud) and writers. The catholic education he received will leave its mark on him. He became nonconformist; he wrote blasphemous lyrics, such as "Au nom du Pere, au nom du vice, au nom des rades et des mégots" (In the name of the Father, in the name of vice, in the name of the cafés and the (cigarette) butts), made biblical and latin references in "Femme de Loth" and many others. Musically, H-FT draws mostly from classic rock, with rare nods to the latest musical trends, and generally leaves the arranging to a collaborator. But his songs are most notable for instantly recognisable lyrics, with their trademarks streams of consciousness, surreal and often extreme or dark imagery, often tinged with comedy, cynicism, literary references, neologisms and liberal use of scientific, long or foreign words. The lyrical mayhem sometimes spreads into comically long song titles, such as Enfermé dans les cabinets (avec la fille mineure des 80 chasseurs), or Exercice de simple provocation avec 33 fois le mot « coupable ».
His avowed influences include Léo Ferré, Lou Reed, and many French, Anglo-saxon and German novelists and poets, with a preference for romantic litterature.

Scandale Mélancolique

Sentiments discordants
Le parme des colchiques
Rend le ciel aveuglant
La beauté de l'ennui
Dans la nuit qui bourdonne
A la galeuse féerie
Des crépuscules d'automne
Scandale mélancolique
Les morts parlent en dormant
Et leurs cris oniriques
Traversent nos écrans
Vieil écho sibyllin
Qui bugue entre deux mails
Avec des mots fusains
Sous le flou des pastels
De la folie des ombres
A l'alchimie des heures
On se perd dans le nombre
Infini des rumeurs
C'est juste une pénombre
Au fond de la douleur
C'est juste un coin trop sombre
Au bout d'un autre ailleurs
Scandale mélancolique
Ivres et gorgées de sang
Les démones antiques
Jouent avec nos enfants
De vénéneux parfums
En chimériques errances
L'éternel rêve humain
A le charme un peu rance
De la folie des ombres
A l'alchimie des heures
On se perd dans le nombre
Infini des rumeurs
C'est juste une pénombre
Au fond de la douleur
C'est juste un coin trop sombre
Au bout d'un autre ailleurs
Scandale mélancolique
A l'ouest du néant
Dans leur marbre gothique
Besognées par le temps
Les reines immortelles
Ont le silence austère
Des mères qui nous rappellent
Sous leur lingerie de pierre
De la folie des ombres
A l'alchimie des heures
On se perd dans le nombre
Infini des rumeurs
C'est juste une pénombre
Au fond de la douleur
C'est juste un coin trop sombre
Au bout d'un autre ailleurs
The lyrics of Scandale Mélancolique paint a vivid image of a world that is both beautiful and melancholic. The opening lines convey a sense of contradicting emotions, with "discordant feelings" and the "blinding" beauty of the purple crocuses filling the sky. The "beauty of ennui" is explored further in the "humming" night, with the "leperous fairy" of autumn's twilight. The melancholy continues in the second verse with "sleep-talking" dead, whose "dreamlike cries" pierce through our screens. The singer describes the "frenzied shadows" and the "alchemy of time" that leave us lost in the endless "rumors." The third verse adds to the tone with images of "antique demons" playing with our children, drawing us in with their poisonous fragrances as we wander through chimerical dreams.
Throughout the song, the singer describes the "penumbra of pain" and the "dark corners" that lead us further into the unknown. Even the "immortal queens" whose statues stand in gothic marble remind us of our own mortality with their "austere silence." The overall effect of the lyrics is one of wistful beauty, drawing the listener in with images of a world both familiar and strange, both lovely and mournful.
