From a first single in 1979, the group successfully combined a pop rock and power pop (and sometimes, a blues rock) influenced backing with harmony side-vocals and Lewis' strident voice, and the band had numerous hit songs during the 1980s and early 1990s. These include "The Power of Love" and "Back in Time" (both of which were featured in the film "Back to the Future"), "I Want a New Drug", "Doin' It All (For My Baby)", "Do You Believe in Love?" "Hip to Be Square", "Stuck With You", and "Jacob's Ladder". Huey Lewis shared three Grammy awards, an American Music Award, and a People's Choice Award along with several artists for his role singing the 1985 charity song "We Are the World" as well.

Better Be True
Huey Lewis & The News Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I don't mind you talking about me and you
I might think it's funny if you're fooling with my money
But I don't like you saying things that just aren't tru
I don't mind discussing wisdom & youth
And I don't mind you cussing if you're telling the truth
You can joke about the weather on a lousy day
But don't tell me that you're leaving if you're planning to stay
Well it don't have to be different it don't have to be true
If you got something to tell me it better be true
It don't have to be clever between me and you
If it's gonna be forever it better be true
I don't mind rehearsing though I'd much rather play
I don't mind conversing if you've got something to say
A little exaggeration might be understood
But lying to me darling just ain't no good.
If you feel like telling me that you will never leave me
Don't you dare deceive me cause that will never do
Well it don't have to be different it don't have to be true
If you got something to tell me it better be true
It don't have to be clever between me & you
If it's gonna be forever it better be true
In Huey Lewis & The News's song Better Be True, the singer talks about the importance of honesty and truthfulness in a relationship. He says he doesn't mind his partner joking around or playing with his imagination, but he draws the line when it comes to lies and deceit. He wants his partner to be honest with him, especially if it's about their feelings, plans or intentions towards him.
The lyrics suggest that the singer values trust above all else in his relationship. He doesn't want to be misled, disappointed or hurt by false promises, fake emotions or hidden agendas. He wants his partner to be transparent and genuine with him, even if it means being vulnerable or uncomfortable. He believes that if they are truly meant to be together, then the truth will only strengthen their bond.
The song's message is relevant to anyone who has been in a relationship where honesty was lacking or betrayed. It reminds us that trust is the foundation of any healthy and lasting relationship, and that without it, love cannot thrive.
