But It
Huey Lewis & The News Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You don't know
How I feel
You never know
How I feel
When I needed you
To come around
You always try
To put me down

Well I know girl
Believe me when I say
That you
Are someday gonna pay
Girl but its alright
All right girl
You hurt me
But its alright

Hey now one day
You'll see
You'll never find
A guy like me
Who'll love you right
Both day and night
You never have to worry
Cause its alright

Oh what I'm telling you girl
And we both know its true
I am so mixed up over you
Girl but its alright
All right girl
You hurt me
But its alright
Oh yeah

Oh yeah
My my my baby

I said its alright
Alright girl
Hey now its alright
Alright girl

Now everything
I wanna say
You'll meet a guy
That'll make you pay
Hell treat you bad
And make you sad
And you will ruin
The love you had

Oh but Id hate
To say I told you so
Baby
You got to got to be more so
Yeah but its alright
Alright girl
You are payin now
But its alright

Goodbye love
Goodbye girl
You're paying now
But its alright
You hurt me once

You hurt me twice
Oh baby

Overall Meaning

The song “But it's Alright” by Huey Lewis and The News is a classic soulful tune that talks about a failed relationship. The lyrics convey the feeling of being hurt and betrayed by a partner who was not there when needed. They also talk about how the singer will move on and find love again, while the ex-partner will experience the consequences of their actions. The chorus affirms that although it hurt, it's going to be alright.

The first verse talks about feeling let down by the person, who always tries to put the singer down. Despite their need for support, they are never there. The second verse talks about how the ex-partner will realize what they've lost and never find someone who’ll love them the way the singer did. The chorus repeats the message that everything is alright, and the person who hurt the singer will pay the price.

Overall, the song communicates the message that people should move on from relationships that don't work out, and find someone who will truly love and appreciate them.

Song so catchy most people don't listen to the lyrics

@christosstamato527

True. This is actually a rather sad song, despite the Beach Boys-like doo wop harmonies and the melodic guitar by Chris Hayes.

Hell, Hayes' solo can make a grown dude cry and Huey knocked it out of the park! Probably his greatest (and one of the most emotive) vocal performance to date!

On a side note, I do agree Mr Bateman. And no, their masterpiece most likely wasn't 'Hip To Be Square'!

@Chris Stamato One of the best leads ever.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them

I said the same thing in. This one and a few others from the 80's.
