From a first single in 1979, the group successfully combined a pop rock and power pop (and sometimes, a blues rock) influenced backing with harmony side-vocals and Lewis' strident voice, and the band had numerous hit songs during the 1980s and early 1990s. These include "The Power of Love" and "Back in Time" (both of which were featured in the film "Back to the Future"), "I Want a New Drug", "Doin' It All (For My Baby)", "Do You Believe in Love?" "Hip to Be Square", "Stuck With You", and "Jacob's Ladder". Huey Lewis shared three Grammy awards, an American Music Award, and a People's Choice Award along with several artists for his role singing the 1985 charity song "We Are the World" as well.

Simple as That
Huey Lewis & The News Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
At the end of the week, you collect your pay
That's just where it's at
It's as simple as that
You pay your bills the best that you can
But the rising cost sure hurts a family man
While the rich man gets fat
And the money goes so fast it ain't funny
Your mind's made up to get that house on the hill
But you just don't know if you ever will
Because you can't get the cash
It's as simple as that
'Cause the man from the bank, he won't give you a loan
Without putting a mortgage on all that you own
A tit for a tat
It's how it is
It's a simple as that
Ooh, and the money goes so fast it ain't funny
It's as simple, it's as simple, it's as simple as that
Before you know it the kids are all grown
And married off with kids of their own
And it's all in the past
It's as simple as that
You've reached the autumn of your life
And all that's left is you and your wife
And a dog and a cat
It's how it is
It's as simple as that
Ooh, and the money goes so fast it ain't funny
It's as simple, it's as simple, it's as simple as that
It's as simple, it's as simple, it's as simple as that
It's as simple, it's as simple, it's as simple as that
The song Simple as That by Huey Lewis and the News is a reflection on the struggles faced by working-class families. It starts off by acknowledging the difficult work that goes into earning a paycheck and how it seems like it should be enough to make ends meet, but rising costs make it difficult to stay afloat. The lyrics paint a picture of the wealthy getting richer while the middle and lower classes struggle to keep up.
The chorus reminds us that money is fleeting and goes fast, and that the dreams we have of owning a home or achieving financial stability can often feel out of reach. The second verse brings up the struggle of trying to get a loan from a bank without putting everything you own on the line. It's a reality that many families face, and the lyrics capture the frustration that comes with it. The last verse is a reflection on life's journey and how it all seems to go by in a blink of an eye.
Overall, Simple as That is a commentary on the difficulties of working-class life and the way that the financial struggles we face can impact our hopes and dreams.
