Small World (Part One)
Huey Lewis and The News

All around the world
There are people like you and me
From the poorest beggar in the street
To the richest king and queen
Some people take
And then they never give
You gotta learn to give and take
If ya want to learn to live
In a small world
Now we can
Fight one another
Like they to on T.V.
Or we can
Help one another
The way it's supposed to be
If we all give a little
It could really mean a lot
It's a small world

But it's the only one we've got
Small world

Overall Meaning

In Huey Lewis & The News's song Small World Part 1, the singer is reflecting on the fact that around the world, there are people from all walks of life. Rich or poor, all human beings are living on the same planet and must coexist with one another. The lyrics suggest that some people take more than they give, and the only way to learn to live in this small world is to find a balance between giving and taking. The song encourages individuals to help one another as it's the right thing to do.

The song's underlying message is about the human experience, where everyone is connected, and we should be helping one another rather than fighting. The phrase 'give a little, mean a lot' suggests that we don't need to do much to make a significant impact on others' lives. The song's catchy melody and upbeat tempo encourage a positive outlook on life in general, encouraging listeners to pay it forward and make small changes that could make a big difference.

@you2099 'preachy' yeah, not 'peachy' lol. Blame that autocorrecting!

This is an outstanding album my man, not as strong as the previous ones, but still good. And it's what Huey set out to do with this album, not make more pop songs any more but experiment with rhythms.

Which is what he did, you've got jazz, reggae, even fecking zyndeco! And those Steely Dam progressions in 'SW' too. They also got the mixing right in this album (compared to 'Fore!' that had a few tunes that sounded too 'Huge'. Which wasn't what they wanted them to sound like). 'Small World' was definitely overhated.

As for the juice, Huey somehow released 5 more albums even though he was 'out of juice' and are actually very well done.

Do I even need to talk about the excellence that was 'Plan B'. Certainly one of the most unappreciated albums of the 21st century thus far. Among Huey Lewis & The News' finest.

This song shows how much talent this band really has. A great fusion of jazz and rock

@willritter4076

Unfortunately it came at the end of Huey's run when people were kind of sick of him... this groovy tune way under-performed... I'd greatly appreciate it if some 80s fans would view my acoustic piano & vocal cover (live, no autotune) of PRAYING FOR TIME on my channel in tribute to the great George Michael. George hasn't gotten his due for all the contributions he made to modern music a vocalist, songwriter and producer. But eventually he will get his due. THANK YOU GEORGE.

@Doobie1975

Great song that deserved to go much higher than #25 in late 1988, I always felt this song would've done better if it was released sometime around 1984-86.

@Trueblood831

Highly under-rated...this is one of my fave song by the band!

@mikey_suzefour

Totally agreed Bill!

@ronaldboonstra4834

@Mikey_Suze Four true,true!

@TheA.K.

I think it just threw a lot of people off, it was a much different sound than their previous albums.

@EloyGijon67

It's a law in Anglo world that there's a stupid comment saying "underrated".
🤔

@pianoafterdark

Mine too! Together with "Stuck With You"...

@mikey_suzefour

This band's so great in concert - They did 3 encores for our crowd after their 2 initial sets. (Phoenix, AZ. Mid 90's)
