That
Huey Lewis & The News Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Must have been out of my mind
Must have been a little bit crazy
I had heaven in my hands and didn't even know to do with it
Must have been seeing things
I can't believe the tears in my eyes
And now all I want to do is tell you what you mean to me

Never been one for crying
Don't waste time on jealousy
Never even thought about holding on till it happened to me, yes it happened to me

[Chorus:]
That's not me.
Don't look like me
Don't walk like me when you're out together
That's not me
Don't act the same way
Ain't got the same thing
He don't love you like I do

I must have been driving too hard
Doing ninety in a thirty-five zone
And now everything I do
Designed to get you back to me
You know, walking through stone
Breathing under water
Is easier than trying to shake a memory

Never been one for crying
Don't waste time on jealousy
Never even thought about holding on till it happened to me, yes it happened to me

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

In Huey Lewis and The News's song "That's Not Me," the singer reflects on a lost love and the mistakes he made in letting her go. He admits that he must have been out of his mind to let someone so special slip through his fingers. He had heaven in his hands but was blinded by his own foolishness and didn't know what to do with it. Now, with tears in his eyes, all he wants to do is tell her how much she means to him.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "That's not me" as the singer compares himself to the man who is now with his former love. He asserts that this other man doesn't look like him, walk like him, act the same way, or love her like he does. The singer is consumed with jealousy as he attempts to win back what he has lost. He knows he must have been driving too hard in the past, doing reckless things that ultimately led to the end of their relationship. But now, he is willing to do whatever it takes to get her back, even if it means walking through stone or breathing underwater.

Overall, "That's Not Me" is a haunting yet hopeful reflection on lost love and the lengths we will go to reclaim what we have lost. It is a reminder that sometimes, we don't realize the value of what we have until it's gone.

Song so catchy most people don't listen to the lyrics

@christosstamato527

True. This is actually a rather sad song, despite the Beach Boys-like doo wop harmonies and the melodic guitar by Chris Hayes.

Hell, Hayes' solo can make a grown dude cry and Huey knocked it out of the park! Probably his greatest (and one of the most emotive) vocal performance to date!

On a side note, I do agree Mr Bateman. And no, their masterpiece most likely wasn't 'Hip To Be Square'!

@Chris Stamato One of the best leads ever.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them

I said the same thing in. This one and a few others from the 80's.
