From a first single in 1979, the group successfully combined a pop rock and power pop (and sometimes, a blues rock) influenced backing with harmony side-vocals and Lewis' strident voice, and the band had numerous hit songs during the 1980s and early 1990s. These include "The Power of Love" and "Back in Time" (both of which were featured in the film "Back to the Future"), "I Want a New Drug", "Doin' It All (For My Baby)", "Do You Believe in Love?" "Hip to Be Square", "Stuck With You", and "Jacob's Ladder". Huey Lewis shared three Grammy awards, an American Music Award, and a People's Choice Award along with several artists for his role singing the 1985 charity song "We Are the World" as well.

Whole Lotta Love
Huey Lewis & The News Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I want to stop dreamin', and get back home to the real thing
Late last night I read the letter you sent
Woke up this morning, under a tent
We've got a whole lotta lovin' to do
I'm tired of these girly magazines
I want to stop dreamin', and get back home to the real thing
Woke up this morning, under a tent
We've got a whole lotta lovin' to do
My mini bar's empty, but I'm still alive
I'm all alone but my bed's big enough for a party of five
Tossing and turning until a quarter to three
Can't get to sleep without watching TV
We've got a whole lotta lovin' to do
We've got a whole lotta lovin' to do
Oh, it's been weeks since I've seen you
I'm hoping that you mean it
Tell me that you understand
But there's one little thing that I'm worried about
I hope that you remember who I am
I'm the one with the harmonica
Oh, it's been weeks since I've seen you
I'm hoping that you mean it
Tell me that you understand
But there's one little thing that I'm worried about
I hope that you remember who I am
Everybody else is holding hands
I'm here lonely, playing around with my microphone stand
And I'm coming home, only one more week
The first three days we won't get no sleep
We've got a whole lotta lovin' to do
We've got a whole lotta lovin' to do
A whole lotta lovin'
A whole lotta lovin'
We've got a whole lotta lovin'
The lyrics of Huey Lewis & the News's "Whole Lotta Lovin'" express a yearning for the real thing instead of the mere simulations in magazines or television shows. The singer is tired of dreaming and wants to return home to his significant other. He has received a letter, which he read last night, and this morning he woke up feeling like he was under a tent, excited and ready to engage in a whole lot of loving. Despite his loneliness and an empty mini-bar, he feels alive and is hoping that his significant other remembers who he is.
The repetitions of the chorus profess the desire for a vast, profound, and fulfilling experience of love with his significant other. The singer is careful, however, to note that he is the one with the harmonica, to prevent any ambiguity or confusion, thus emphasizing the importance of individual identity within meaningful relationships. Huey Lewis's passionate voice expresses sentiment and zeal over the theme of the song, the fulfillment, and satisfaction derived from a whole lot of loving.
