From a first single in 1979, the group successfully combined a pop rock and power pop (and sometimes, a blues rock) influenced backing with harmony side-vocals and Lewis' strident voice, and the band had numerous hit songs during the 1980s and early 1990s. These include "The Power of Love" and "Back in Time" (both of which were featured in the film "Back to the Future"), "I Want a New Drug", "Doin' It All (For My Baby)", "Do You Believe in Love?" "Hip to Be Square", "Stuck With You", and "Jacob's Ladder". Huey Lewis shared three Grammy awards, an American Music Award, and a People's Choice Award along with several artists for his role singing the 1985 charity song "We Are the World" as well.

Huey Lewis & The News Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And somedays pass on be I'll be working here forever,
At least until I die, dammed if you do, dammed if you don't
I'm supposed to get a raise week, you know damn well I won't.
Workin' for a livin' (workin')
Workin' for a livin' (workin')
Workin' for a livin', livin' and workin'
Hey I'm not complaining 'cause I really need the work
Hitting up my buddy's got me feeling like a jerk
Hundred dollar car note, two hundred rent.
I get a check on Friday, but it's all ready spent.
Workin' for a livin' (workin')
Workin' for a livin' (workin')
Workin' for a livin', livin' and workin'
I'm taking what they giving 'cause I'm working for a livin'.
Whoa, Workin' for a livin' whoa, taking what they giving
Whoa, Workin' for a livin' whoa, ooh
Bus boy, bartender, ladies of the night
Grease monkey, ex-junky, winner of the fight
Walking on the streets its really all the same
Selling souls, rock n' roll, any other day
Workin' for a livin' (workin')
Workin' for a livin' (workin')
Workin' for a livin', livin' and workin'
I'm taking what they giving 'cause I'm working for a livin'.
Workin' for a livin', livin' and workin'
I'm taking what they giving 'cause I'm working for a livin'.
Workin' for a livin', livin' and workin'
The lyrics to Huey Lewis and The News's song Workin For A Livin describe the struggles of working hard for a living and not being able to make ends meet. The first stanza talks about the feeling of being stuck in a job forever, with no way out until death. It also illustrates the harsh reality of not getting a raise despite working hard. The chorus then emphasizes that despite the difficulties of working, one has no choice but to take what they are given and keep on working.
The second stanza begins by acknowledging that the singer is not complaining and is grateful for the work that he has. However, the lack of money is portrayed when the singer mentions that he is already in debt before payday arrives. This stanza paints a picture of financial difficulties that many people face, even when they are working hard to make a living.
The third stanza lists different professions, highlighting the diversity of people that work hard to make a living. Waiters, bartenders, prostitutes, mechanics, and musicians are all mentioned as individuals who have to work for a living. The lyrics suggest that no matter what line of work a person is in, the struggle is the same – to make enough money to survive.
Overall, the song Workin For A Livin' highlights the everyday struggles of people working hard to make a living, with no end in sight. The lyrics paint a picture of a harsh reality that many people face on a daily basis.

@fretbuzz59
"Best Bands" unnecessarily--incorrectly, in fact--capitalized. Same with "Harmonica" and "Saxophone." But part of the band's name--"the news"--not capitalized. Twice. SMH.
