From a first single in 1979, the group successfully combined a pop rock and power pop (and sometimes, a blues rock) influenced backing with harmony side-vocals and Lewis' strident voice, and the band had numerous hit songs during the 1980s and early 1990s. These include "The Power of Love" and "Back in Time" (both of which were featured in the film "Back to the Future"), "I Want a New Drug", "Doin' It All (For My Baby)", "Do You Believe in Love?" "Hip to Be Square", "Stuck With You", and "Jacob's Ladder". Huey Lewis shared three Grammy awards, an American Music Award, and a People's Choice Award along with several artists for his role singing the 1985 charity song "We Are the World" as well.

You Left the Water Running
Huey Lewis & The News Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You left the water running, running from these eyes of mine
You turned out the light of love
You left with another guy
You turned off all your love for me
But you forgot to turn off the cry
You forgot to turn off the cry
You pulled the shades away down low
And disconnected the telephone
But these tears a running from my eyes
I can't turn them off and on
No, I can't turn them off and on
You left the water running when you left me here behind
You left the water running, running from these eyes of mine
You locked the door and left me outside
And then you threw the key away
But baby, you'll regret, baby you'll be upset
When you get your water bill to pay
When you get your water bill to pay
You left the water running when you left me here behind
You left the water running, running from these eyes of mine
The song "You Left the Water Running" by Huey Lewis & The News is a heart-wrenching ballad about a love lost. The opening verse talks about how the person who left turned off all the other sources of light, but forgot to turn off the cry (emotions). The water left running is symbolic of the tears that the singer can't seem to stop from flowing since the other person left.
The lyrics go on to talk about how the other person disconnected the telephone and locked the door, leaving the singer outside. The singer warns his ex that she will regret her actions when she gets her water bill, meaning the tears will keep flowing until she returns.
The song showcases the depth of pain that comes with heartbreak and being left behind. The singer seems to be locked in a cycle of grief and can't seem to move on, as seen in the repeated lines "running from these eyes of mine."
Overall, "You Left the Water Running" is a poignant reflection on love lost and the struggles that come with accepting and moving on from it.
