Who Am I?
Hugh Jackman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He thinks that man is me
He knew him at a glance
That stranger he has found
This man could be my chance

Why should I save his hide?
Why should I right this wrong?
When I have come so far
And struggled for so long?

If I speak, I am condemned
If I stay silent, I am damned

I am the master of hundreds of workers
They all look to me
Can I abandon them, how would they live
If I am not free?

If I speak, I am condemned
If I stay silent, I am damned

Who am I?
Can I condemn this man to slavery?
Pretend I do not feel his agony?
This innocent who wears my face
Who goes to judgement in my place

Who am I?
Can I conceal myself for evermore?
Pretend I'm not the man I was before?
And must my name until I die
Be no more than an alibi?

Must I lie?
How can I ever face my fellow men?
How can I ever face myself again?
My soul belongs to God, I know
I made that bargain long ago

He gave me hope, when hope was gone
He gave me strength to journey on

Who am I? Who am I?
I'm Jean Valjean

And so Javert, you see it's true

That man bears no more guilt than you
Who am I? 24601!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Hugh Jackman's song "Who Am I?" come from the musical "Les Misérables" and are sung by the character Jean Valjean. In this song, Valjean is torn between his own personal struggles and the ethical dilemma he faces when he encounters a stranger who resembles him and is about to be wrongly accused. Valjean questions his responsibilities and the implications of his actions as he contemplates whether to save the stranger or let him suffer.

Valjean begins by acknowledging that the stranger could be his chance for redemption, an opportunity to right the wrongs he has experienced throughout his life. However, he is conflicted. He questions why he should help this unknown man when he has already come so far and endured so much on his own journey. Valjean understands that whatever decision he makes, he will face condemnation or damnation.

As Valjean reflects on his own position of authority and the people who depend on him, he realizes that his actions will have consequences. He wonders if he can abandon those who rely on him for their livelihoods if he chooses to act for his own freedom and justice. Valjean understands that remaining silent will also lead to his own damnation.

The chorus of the song encapsulates Valjean's internal struggle and the identity crisis he faces. He questions his own existence, his ability to condemn others, and whether he can hide his true self from the world. Valjean ponders if his name will forever be a mere protection and if he must continue to live a life of lies. He grapples with the guilt of his past actions and the impact they have on how he perceives himself and how others perceive him.

In the final lines of the song, Valjean acknowledges that his soul belongs to God, emphasizing his moral and spiritual struggle. He recognizes that hope and strength were given to him when he was at his lowest point, aiding him on his journey. Valjean eventually reveals his true identity to Javert, asserting that the man he encounters has no more guilt than the relentless inspector himself. The song culminates in Valjean defiantly proclaiming his identity as Jean Valjean and his prisoner number, 24601.

Overall, "Who Am I?" explores the themes of moral introspection, redemption, responsibility, and the complex nature of personal identity within the context of a society plagued by injustice and inequality.

In French, these are the lines:
"If my soul belongs to God alone,
And none can claim it as their own,
If this is a trial God sent me,
Then it is decided for me.
What to do? There's nothing to do!
I am Jean Valjean!
Here is the truth at last, Javert,
An innocent was tried in my stead!
Who am I? 24601!"

French version:
He thinks that man is me,
This could be my chance,
I have nothing to do
Other than to remain silent.
But I have struggled for so much
Built and invented everything,
Only to give it up to a stray remorse.
If I stay silent, I am damned
And if I speak, I am condemned
And all those workers who work in the factory
And who believe in me. Can I abandon them?
I would be sending them back to nothing again.
If I stay silent, I am damned.
But if I speak, I am condemned.
What to do? Betray this man damned by error?
Let him fall into the depths of misfortune?
This innocent who bears my face,
Who goes to judgement in my place,
What to do? Refuse to walk back into hell
Because I created my paradise on Earth,
Cross out my past forevermore
And hide in oblivion.
What to do? How can I look in the mirror and see
The face of a man who dared not look back.
My soul belongs to God alone,
And none can claim it as his own
If this is a trial God sent to me,
Then it is already decided for me!
What to do? There is nothing to do!
I am Jean Valjean!
Here is the truth at last, Javert,
An innocent was tried in my stead!
Who am I? 24601!

To the Musicals fans out there

The phantom of the opera and Les miserables.

They think that man is me
Without a second glance

The one, they have found
This man could be my chance
Why should I save his life?
Why should I show my face?
When I have come so far
And struggled in this cave?
If I speak, I am condemned
If I stay silent, I am damned

I am the master of hundreds of voices
They all look to me
Can I abandon them, how would they sing if I'm not free?
If I speak, they are condemned
If I stay silent, I am damned

Who am I?
Can I condemn this man to slavery?
Pretend I do not feel his agony
This innocent who has a deformed face
Who goes to judgement in my place

Who am I?
Can I conceal myself for evermore?
Pretend I'm not the monster I was before?
And must my name until I die
Be no more than an alibi?

Must I hide?
How can I ever face my apprentices again?
How can I ever wear my mask again?
My soul belongs to Dark, i know
I made that bargain long ago
Gave me song, when song was gone
It Gave me power to journey on

Who am I?
Who am I?
I'm phantom....

And so Daroga! you see it's true
This man bears no more guilt than you
Who am I?
O-pe-ra Phan-tom!

This scene is literally more than 4 chapters in the book

@samuelbarber6177

Isn’t it three times the size of the Bible?

@MargaritaMagdalena

Wouldn't that be 5 chapters?

@someonenew439

@Samuel Barber yeah. Les miserables has 1,462 while the Bible has around 1200. But les miserables has 655,478 words in the original, while the Bible has 783,136- 807,307 words( depending on the version). So yes it’s a bigger book page wise but has less words.

@mikeor-

If you read the novel by full chapters (every book in the five volumes has at least six or seven chapters with the exception of the one titled Javert Derailed, which depicts his suicide), then yes, it does take up four chapters. Actually it takes up five if you count the one where Valjean confesses.

Hugh Jackman's singing is not as good as the originals. But goddam the way he delivers the lyrics is really passionate. His acting in this is amazing

@Noah Veatch

Dude, seriously...sure he’s not as talented vocally as Alfie Boe or someone like that. That said, his depiction of the internal struggle that Valjean is going through at this moment is absolutely flawless. It’s really beautiful.

@VexsPlayPen

The whole show is like that, it is good on an acting level, not so good on a musical level.

@skoz3342

Well they also had them sing live so they had to keep doing retake after retake. Vocal fatigue is real, especially for demanding songs such as these. That's the problem with doing a film version with a director who DOESN'T ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND the ins and outs of musical performance. You should hear Hugh in Oklahoma!... he's quite good. :)
