Evenin
Hugh Laurie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Evening, every night you come and you find me
Why must you always remind me, that my baby's gone
Evening, you got me deeper in your power
Every minute seems like an hour
Since my baby's gone

Shadows fall upon the wall
That's the time I miss your kisses most of all
Even though I try, how can I go on
Oh evening, let me sleep 'til the glow of dawn is breaking
I don't care if I don't awaken
Since my baby's gone

Shadows fall upon the wall
That's the time I miss your kisses most of all
Even though I try, how can I go on
Oh evening, let me sleep 'til the glow of dawn is breaking

I don't care if I don't awaken
Since my baby's gone

Overall Meaning

In the song "Evening" by Hugh Laurie, the singer is lamenting the loss of their significant other. The evening, which used to be a time of relaxation and joy for the singer, has become a source of pain as it reminds them of the absence of their loved one. The lyrics describe the power that evening holds over the singer, making each minute seem like an hour as they struggle to come to terms with their heartbreak.

The chorus of the song emphasizes this feeling of helplessness and longing, with the singer acknowledging that they can't go on without their partner. The shadows that fall upon the wall reflect the emptiness and sadness that have taken over since the break-up. The singer speaks of missing their partner's kisses most of all, suggesting that physical touch was an important part of their relationship.

The final lines of the chorus, where the singer asks to be allowed to sleep until the dawn, convey a deep sense of despair. They don't care if they don't awaken, as everything seems pointless without their partner. Overall, "Evening" is a poignant reminder of the pain of lost love and the impact it can have on every aspect of one's life.

Crazy drummer

The most impressive thing about his music is how he does not care about making money at all, he just loves doing it. That amount of non-commercial art is something really rare today.

Then why does he sell it instead of making it free? If he loves doing it he's making the music anyway and he's already rich why not give it away?

Irvine Meadows

Come on,music is same hard work like anything else, and it has to be paid. And of course he has to pay to all the session musicians, people who film it, to rent a studio etc. Anyway, if you want to download it for free, you will.

He only had one concert here and I went to see it due to Dr. House. I loved the tv-show and I was curious of how he's singing. He's a showman! Talented, with a great voice, funny, relaxed. I wish I could listen to him live again...
