Unchain My Heart
Hugh Laurie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Unchain my heart
Baby let me be
Unchain my heart
'Cause you don't care about me
You've got me sowed up like a pillow case
But you let my love go to waste
So unchain my heart
Set me free

Unchain my heart
Baby let me go
Unchain my heart
'Cause you don't love me no more
Every time I call you on the phone
Some fella tells me that you're not at home
So unchain my heart
Set me free

You got me under your spell
Like a man in a trance
But I know darn well
That I don't stand a chance

Unchain my heart
Let me go my way
Unchain my heart
You worry me night and day
Why let me lead a life of misery
When you don't care a bag of beans for me
So unchain my heart and set me free

Unchain my heart (Unchain my heart)
Let me go my way (Let me go my way)
Unchain my heart (Unchain my heart)
You worry me night and day (Worry me night and day)
Why let me lead a life of misery
When you don't care a bag of beans for me

So unchain my heart and set me free
So unchain my heart and set me free

Overall Meaning

The song "Unchain My Heart" by Hugh Laurie, which was originally composed by Bobby Sharp and first recorded by Ray Charles in 1961, speaks about a person who is trapped in a toxic relationship and is seeking to break free from the chains that bind them. The song opens with a plea to the person who holds the singer's heart to "unchain" it and "let me be" as they no longer care about the singer. The metaphorical language used in "sowed up like a pillowcase" and "under your spell like a man in a trance" emphasize the singer's entrapment in the relationship.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "unchain my heart" several times, driven by the passion in the singer's voice. The second verse highlights the lies and deception that the singer's lover perpetrates, as everytime the singer calls, they are told that their lover is not at home. The third verse brings home the sad reality of the situation and the fact that the singer is being made to lead a life of misery with someone who does not care about them.

@Katherine Jones
One-time author. He needs to finish the sequel to his novel, The Gun Seller (1993) which I believe is called The Paper Soldier but I’m not too sure.

It's so funny how people are still absolutely astouned that Laurie's not American when his life is the epitome of Britishness ever: went to Eton, studied at Cambridge and was a professional rower there in the Oxford-Cambridge rowing race, and best friends with Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, and Rowan Atkinson. Just shows how amazing an actor he is!
