Evenin'
Hugh Laurie and the Copper Bottom Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Evening, every night you come and you find me
Why must you always remind me, that my baby's gone
Evening, you got me deeper in your power
Every minute seems like an hour
Since my baby's gone

Shadows fall upon the wall
That's the time I miss your kisses most of all
Even though I try, how can I go on
Oh evening, let me sleep 'til the glow of dawn is breaking
I don't care if I don't awaken
Since my baby's gone

Shadows fall upon the wall
That's the time I miss your kisses most of all
Even though I try, how can I go on
Oh evening, let me sleep 'til the glow of dawn is breaking

I don't care if I don't awaken
Since my baby's gone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Hugh Laurie's "Evenin'" express the sorrow and pain that comes with heartbreak. The singer is lamenting over the absence of their beloved, and how the evening time seems to remind them of their loneliness. The song opens with the singer addressing the evening, asking why it must always come and remind them that their baby is gone. They are in the thralls of grief and find themselves sinking deeper into its clutches with every passing moment. The unending minutes feel like hours in their current state of despair.

The shadows that fall upon the wall serve as a haunting reminder of their lost love. The lyrics express a longing for their partner's embrace and the kisses that they miss most of all during the evening time. The singer tries to press on, but they find it difficult to continue without their love. The refrain repeats the sentiment of the opening lines, with the singer pleading to the evening to let them sleep until morning so they don't have to face the pain of another day without their significant other.

moultriemanicmechani

He's a very accomplished blues musician , trivia : every instrument you see on house , belonged to him . There are lots of Easter eggs in there related to the band

It's so much fun to see people that you don't normally associate with music doing such a fantastic job of it!

Scott Holtzman

Hugh is a musician first, he worked tons of music into his house role. He was always noodling on the guitar but when Wilson bought him the Hammond Organ and he played Whiter Shade of Pale I had goose bumps he is a true multi-instrumentalist

DocW:

John Smith has completely missed this mans talent.
He is not trying to be a hillbilly he is an artist doing a great range of disciplines in the thespian 🎭 field.
He has all the talents, acting, music, writing etc. . He came out of a huge period of British creativity.
I have been continually surprised by his range.
Just an observation. Great stuff Hugh
