Gold
Hugo Kant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Fly-pitcher run
'cause I hear them sirens cry out.
Leave no trace of where you've gone
I ain't the one to point you out.

'Cause together in concrete we stand
In this broken land.
Gold why do you aspire to gold?
Why not something higher?

Clasp knife close
'Cause life is too fragile to follow your code.
Blue devils be told
To leave us alone.

One day the cherry blossoms will unfold
Tongues will roll
And truth be told.

Gold why do you aspire to gold?
Why not something higher?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Hugo Kant's song "Gold" discuss a sense of urban survival, with the singer advising someone (potentially a homeless person, as indicated by the term "fly-pitcher" which refers to someone selling goods on the street) to run and evade the police. The singer promises not to betray the person's whereabouts, highlighting their solidarity in the "concrete" of the city. However, the song also questions the value of pursuing wealth and material possessions such as "gold," asking why we don't aspire to something "higher." This line may be interpreted as a critique of capitalist society, which values material success over more meaningful pursuits.

The second verse continues the theme of precariousness and fragility, with the singer urging someone to hold onto their "clasp knife" in order to protect themselves in an unpredictable world. They also reference the idea of depression ("blue devils") and encourage them to leave the singer and their companion alone. The final lines of the song offer a sense of hope and beauty, with a reference to cherry blossoms blooming and the importance of telling the truth.

Overall, "Gold" is a poignant meditation on the struggles of life in the city, with a recognition of the importance of solidarity and resistance in a world that can be hostile and unforgiving.

Hugo Kant is one of those artists that I point people to whenever they whine that there's "no good music anymore".

@oddsock8748

I hate it when people say there's no good music anymore, they clearly aren't looking very hard, Hugo Kant is a prime example of why the search is worth it.
The amount of artists I've discovered over the last ten years, covering multiple genres has been amazing. I always suggest looking for specific genres from a country you feel represents it, for me, French instrumental hip hop and Trip hop is phenomenal.
