Aufray represented Luxembourg in the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest, performing the song "Dès que le printemps revient" and finishing fourth. His most famous songs are "Santiano," "Céline," "Stewball" and in Spanish, "Barco de Papel."
Aufray is well known for his French adaptations of Bob Dylan's songs.
His sister was actress Pascale Audret (1936–2000) and his niece is actress Julie Dreyfus.

Je n'avais pas encore fait de disque. Hugues juste un comprenant cette chanson. Mais nous nous sommes rendus de Lausanne à Dieppe où je me suis produit pour la première fois en France. Hugues a présenté cette chanson. Je ne le connaissais pas mais je le trouvais drôlement sympa. Plus tard, il est devenu bien plus connu. Et j'ai bien l'impression que lui et moi avons commencé en même temps.
