t'en vas pas me laisse pas en arrière, emmène moi
je voudrai t'emmener petit frère, avec moi
ms tu es trop pt, pt frère, écoute-moi
que deviendras-tu sans ta mère
chaque soirs pour t'embrasser
moi je ne saurais pas quoi faire
quand je te verrais pleurer
faut pas te decourager
car on vas t'apprendre à l'école
à gagner ta liberté
mais un jour t'en fais pas petit frère
tu iras, tu iras faire ton tour de la terre
comme moi
la la la la la la...
la la la la la la...
The lyrics of Hugues Aufray's song Petit Frère are about a big brother's desire to travel the world with his younger brother. The older brother implores the little one not to leave him behind, and assures him that he would very much like to take him along, but he is too small. He warns his little brother, who is just a small child, that it would be tough for him to survive without their mother, who is always there to hug and kiss him goodnight. The older brother advises the little one to be patient, promising him that they will teach him at school how to become independent and free. Eventually, the older brother is sure that the little brother would be able to travel the world just like him.
The song expresses the close bond between siblings and the love, compassion, and responsibility that older siblings feel for their younger siblings. The older brother wants to share the excitement and adventure of traveling with his little brother, but he's aware that he must protect him and give him guidance until he is mature enough to explore the world on his own.
