Winter Song
Hull Alan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When winter's shadowy fingers
First pursue you down the street
And your boots no longer lie
About the cold around your feet

Do you spare a thought for summer
Whose passage is complete
Whose memories lie in ruins
And whose ruins lie in heat
When winter comes howling in

When the wind is singing strangely
Blowing music through your head
And your rain splattered windows
Make you decide to stay in bed

Do you spare a thought for the homeless tramp
Who wishes he was dead
Or do you pull your bedclothes higher
Dream of summertime instead?
When winter comes howling in

The creeping cold has fingers
That caress without permission
And mystic crystal snowdrops
Only aggravate the condition

Do you spare one thought for the gypsy
With no secure position
Who's turned and spurned by village and town
At the magistrate's decision
When winter comes howling in

When the turkey's in the oven
And the Christmas presents are bought
And Santa's in his module
He's an American astronaut

Do you spare one thought for Jesus
Who had nothing but his thoughts
Who got busted just for talking
And befriending the wrong sorts?

When winter comes howling in
When winter comes howling in

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Winter Song" by Hull Alan describe the feelings one experiences during the winter season. In the first stanza, the singer asks if the listener ever thinks about summer as they walk in the cold. They note that the memories of summer are now in ruins, just as winter is characterized by ruins in the heat. The second stanza discusses the winter blues, with the wind "singing strangely" and rain and snow blurring the windows. The singer questions whether the listener thinks about the homeless in these times, who may be wishing for death instead of facing the harsh conditions.

The third stanza shifts to the physical discomforts of winter, with the cold creeping in and causing discomfort. The singer asks whether the listener thinks about the gypsy, who may not have a secure position and is facing being turned away by villages and towns. The final stanza juxtaposes the commercial festivities of Christmas with the story of Jesus, who had nothing but his thoughts and was condemned for befriending the wrong people. The overarching message of the song is to care about those who are struggling during the winter season and not to forget the true meaning of the holiday season.

Line by Line Meaning

When winter's shadowy fingers First pursue you down the street And your boots no longer lie About the cold around your feet
As winter slowly closes in, the biting cold becomes increasingly unbearable. Even the boots meant to ward off the chill no longer suffice.

Do you spare a thought for summer Whose passage is complete Whose memories lie in ruins And whose ruins lie in heat When winter comes howling in
Summer's warmth and light are but a distant memory, and the broken ruins of its beauty keep summer's memory alive despite the snow and ice that leave everything covered with a cold, white veil when wintertime arrives.

When the wind is singing strangely Blowing music through your head And your rain splattered windows Make you decide to stay in bed
As the wind wails and the rain pours, it's easy to stay inside, where it's warm and dry.

Do you spare a thought for the homeless tramp Who wishes he was dead Or do you pull your bedclothes higher Dream of summertime instead? When winter comes howling in
The homeless are often forgotten during the winter months. Their hardships during such unforgiving conditions are compounded, and they tend to feel more isolated and alone than ever. And it's easy to drown in one's own fears and dreams, but one must not forget about those less fortunate.

The creeping cold has fingers That caress without permission And mystic crystal snowdrops Only aggravate the condition
Winter's chill is inescapable, and the sharpness of the cold is felt like fingers brushing against one's skin. Even the quiet beauty of snow can be a source of misery, a reminder of the misery that winter brings.

Do you spare one thought for the gypsy With no secure position Who's turned and spurned by village and town At the magistrate's decision When winter comes howling in
The gypsies, who've been marginalized for centuries, are among winter's most vulnerable victims. They're often subjected to much worse treatment during wintertime, and their disregard can be devastating.

When the turkey's in the oven And the Christmas presents are bought And Santa's in his module He's an American astronaut
During the holiday season, it's easy to get sidetracked by things that ultimately don't matter. By focusing on the minutiae, it's easy to ignore the real suffering happening around you.

Do you spare one thought for Jesus Who had nothing but his thoughts Who got busted just for talking And befriending the wrong sorts? When winter comes howling in When winter comes howling in
Jesus, a man with very little, endured persecution during his life for befriending those deemed to be outcasts. His teachings have been relegated to history books, and he often gets lost beneath materialism's avalanche.

Saw Lindisfarne at the City Hall so many times. Alan Hull was a total genius! So proud that my passport says "Place of birth: Newcastle-upon-Tyne" :-)

love Lindisfarne and Alan Hull. This is one of those songs that tug at the heartstrings. Alan lives on in the beautiful meaningful songs that he wrote. God bless you

I watched the BBC4 documentary last night , brought it all flooding back, we went to a Newcastle city hall Christmas show from Watford in the 70s no hotel or bnb slept in the car overnight and woke to frost inside the car but worth every bit to see Lindisfarne in their home town , over the years I saw Alan many times , sad loss to music and the people

50 years later, I still well up when I hear this song. I created a bass line to accompany my friend on acoustic for our tribute to Alan. RIP ole bud.

Alan had a great way of saying poetic things which made one think "why did I not say that" ?
The answer is ... "he was a genius and you are not"
I saw him several times at Newcastle City Hall and also at York Uni

A gorgeous, beautiful and melodic tone. Oldwolfcottage considers this a little gemstone.

Looking forward to Sam Fender's version of this. I know he'll do it justice.
