The band is best known thanks to the single Stars from the album You'd Prefer An Astronaut, appearing in the tops of several magazines and on various radio stations at the time.
The band was mostly inactive (except for sporadic performances) until reuniting in 2015 for a series of short tours. On June 23, 2020, the band announced and released Inlet by surprise via the internet, their first album of new material in over twenty-two years. On July 1, 2021, it was announced via Instagram that the band's longtime drummer Bryan St. Pere had passed away at the age of 52, prompting the band to cease activities once again.

Green to Me
Hum Lyrics

And we've all got wounds to clean
Here's a rag, here's some gasoline
She wakes up fine and rested well
Released at last from in the sleeping cell
Breathing comes with ease
It's a sweet revenge
Built on a chemical ride
Wires to the temples, place them on
Lace them on, let's see how we sound
It's all green to me
What a sweet revenge
It's all green to me
See them lift off one by one
I see a cool spot here let's bring her down
Pedal to the ground
A lovely mess
That I am blessed to see
Of me
She lifts her wings up high
Send her shrill of a lifetime until we die
All the dreams, details
Affected in the colored sky
The morning image from the satellite is all blue and green
And we've all got wounds to clean
Here's a rag, here's some gasoline
It's all green to me
{it lifts up your days in a single phase, I felt your hand}
{lift up your skies and all the other times, you realize}
The lyrics to Hum's song Green to Me can be interpreted to be about a person or group of people waking up after going through some sort of traumatic experience, symbolized by the "wounds to clean." The morning image from the satellite is all blue and green, representing the world continuing on despite what has happened. The rag and gasoline could be seen as tools for cleaning up the mess that has been left behind. The female character in the song wakes up fine and rested well, indicating that somehow she has been able to overcome the trauma and move on.
The line "built on a chemical ride" and "my medicine man is the best" suggests that medication may have been used to help the characters cope. The wires to the temples could represent electroconvulsive therapy or some other form of non-traditional treatment for their wounds.
The imagery of the characters setting things in motion, seeing ships lift off one by one, and lifting wings up high can be seen as them moving forward and trying to leave the past behind. They are trying to create a "cool spot" in their lives and bring themselves down to earth again, represented by the pedal to the ground.
In the end, the song seems to be about finding a way to move on from trauma and taking control of one's own life again. The colored sky and the image of them "affecting dreams and details," show that even though they have been through a difficult experience, they are still able to appreciate the beauty in life.
