The band is best known thanks to the single Stars from the album You'd Prefer An Astronaut, appearing in the tops of several magazines and on various radio stations at the time.
The band was mostly inactive (except for sporadic performances) until reuniting in 2015 for a series of short tours. On June 23, 2020, the band announced and released Inlet by surprise via the internet, their first album of new material in over twenty-two years. On July 1, 2021, it was announced via Instagram that the band's longtime drummer Bryan St. Pere had passed away at the age of 52, prompting the band to cease activities once again.

Step into You
Hum Lyrics

It's a race to the ground back to you again
I am lost
The path is unclear and the air is thin
I am over it
And everything here isn't true
Remember how
Your arms were just out of reach
And the years that spilled by were meant for no one
Remember when
We sought comfort in the sand
And then we moved on
To trees that bent the shade for no one else
Wanting to see for myself again
I have come to the ground next to you again
It can talk
And it listens and hears if you want it to
And it's telling me
Everything here isn't true
It's coming down
Sheets of wasted promise
My arms are just out of reach
And the years that poured out were meant for no one
Remember when
We found comfort in the sand
And we reside
Under trees that meant their shade for no one else
So Zion moves in a dusty haze
It's a desert that blooms in our darkest days
I am lost
Chasing thoughts and a dying moon
I am over it
I'm a dried up, wind blown cocoon
The lyrics to Hum's song "Step into You" are a reflection on the struggle to find oneself again amidst the chaos and uncertainty of life. The singer yearns to "see for myself again", but is lost and unsure of the path to take. He compares himself to a "dried up, wind-blown cocoon", indicating a sense of stagnation and inability to grow or change. However, he finds comfort in the presence of another person - possibly a lover - whom he seeks out and joins on the ground.
The lyrics appear to be about a relationship that has weathered many trials and tribulations, but has ultimately found a way to survive. The singer fondly recalls "the years that spilled by", suggesting a long history with this person, despite the fact that they "were meant for no one". They have found comfort together in the past, first in the sand and later under the shade of trees, which they have to themselves ("for no one else").
The song ends on a note of hopeful uncertainty - the singer is still chasing thoughts and an elusive moon, but he knows that he is not alone. The world around him is falling apart ("sheets of wasted promise"), but he has found a safe haven in this other person. It is a poignant and bittersweet look at the struggles of finding oneself in a world that is constantly changing.
