The band is best known thanks to the single Stars from the album You'd Prefer An Astronaut, appearing in the tops of several magazines and on various radio stations at the time.
The band was mostly inactive (except for sporadic performances) until reuniting in 2015 for a series of short tours. On June 23, 2020, the band announced and released Inlet by surprise via the internet, their first album of new material in over twenty-two years. On July 1, 2021, it was announced via Instagram that the band's longtime drummer Bryan St. Pere had passed away at the age of 52, prompting the band to cease activities once again.

The Pod
Hum Lyrics

one
she wakes up smashed as hell and steadies her ass against the
rail
and bends before the pounding rain
she had the widest bright ideas all along about my love
and i need this f**king fix and i beg her
to pick from one of the billion ways to feel no pain
this
whole thing makes me seem
she climbs out from a dream with lungs hardly as she screams a
stereo scream
and bends before astounding rain
she's got a system made of metal and magnet bits inside a brain
she opens her box of tricks and begs me
to pick from one of the billion ways to feel no pain
she had the widest bright ideas
that all the world would sleep away until the nightmare ends
everyone is on wait, wait on the end, only uptight, love
The lyrics to "The Pod" by Hum can be interpreted as a representation of addiction and the self-destructive tendencies that come with it. The singer is trying to cope with their addiction by seeking a fix from their loved one who also seems to be struggling with their own issues. The mention of "the widest bright ideas" and "the system made of metal and magnet bits inside a brain" suggest that the loved one may be relying on technology or substances to cope with their pain as well.
The imagery of rain throughout the song adds to the feeling of despair and hopelessness. The lines "she wakes up smashed as hell and steadies her ass against the rail / and bends before the pounding rain" and "she climbs out from a dream with lungs hardly as she screams a stereo scream / and bends before astounding rain" paint a picture of the two characters being overwhelmed by the weight of their addiction and the consequences that come with it.
The final lines "everyone is on wait, wait on the end, only uptight, love" could suggest that everyone is waiting for the inevitable end result of their actions and that love may be the only thing holding them together. Overall, "The Pod" is a powerful and emotional portrayal of the struggle with addiction and the toll it takes on individuals and relationships.

The morning scatters in and I am steady like a drug
Feeling out this one
She wakes up smashed as hell and steadies her ass against the rail

I was obsessed with their music in the mid 90s. If it was possible to wear out a CD, I was certainly making an effort.
