People Get Ready
Human Nature Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

People get ready
There's a train a-comin'
You don't need no baggage
Just get on board
All you need is faith
To hear the diesel hummin'
You don't need no ticket
Just thank the Lord

People get ready
For the train to Jordan
It's pickin' up passengers
From coast to coast
Faith is the key
Open the doors and board on
There's room for all
Amongst who loves the most

There ain't no room
For the hopeless sinner
Who'd hurt all man kind
Just to save his own
Pitied are those
Whose chances grow thinner
There's no hiding place
In the kingdom's throne

People get ready
There's a train a-comin'
You don't need no baggage
Just get on board
All you need is faith
To hear the diesel hummin'

You don't need no ticket
Just thank the Lord

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "People Get Ready" by Human Nature can be interpreted as an appeal for people to prepare for a spiritual journey towards salvation. The "train a-comin'" is a metaphorical representation of God's grace and the opportunity to attain this grace is open to all, regardless of their station in life. The lyrics suggest that one doesn't need material possessions or wealth to gain access to heaven, only faith in the Lord. The mention of the train picking up passengers from coast to coast implies that the journey towards salvation is a collective effort, and one should be ready to board when the opportunity arises.

The lyrics also emphasize that salvation is not for everyone. The line "There ain't no room for the hopeless sinner who'd hurt all mankind just to save his own" appears to be a warning against those who live a life of selfishness and cruelty. The final line, "There's no hiding place in the kingdom's throne" suggests that there can be no escape from the consequences of one's actions. This is an appeal for people to change their ways and embrace love and empathy if they hope to gain access to God's grace.

Recanting my first comment. The pure a capella they do is awesome; the addition of the beat-box sucks. I've seen them live 5 times now (4 times at IP and once at their new place in the Venetian) and it's worth hearing their live version without the beat-box.
