As a writer he is remembered most for his flamboyant and humorous style. He enjoyed employing action verbs to comically spin outlandish tales that were completely unbelievable, yet provided a unique viewpoint to accurately describe the underlying reality at hand. Thompson almost always wrote in first person narrative, and his stories became so colorfully contrived that they easily slipped into the realm of fiction; however, the basic framework of the story he told was very often true.
Thompson’s writing style and 'Gonzo Journalism' has been widely imitated; his influence on American Writers of the latter half of the 20th century is undeniable.
In his writing, he cultivated the persona of a dangerously absurd, drug-crazed journalist bent on comic self-destruction. While his fictional persona largely mirrored his actual life, Thompson noted that he sometimes felt obligated to live up to the fictional self that he had created.

I want to hear all the tapes so badly now. I love this.

Well Del Torro did mention that Johnny was lucky because he had Thompson, but Benicio didn't have that same luxury, he couldn't hang out with Acosta, and observe him as close, and personal as Depp was able to observe Hunter. I believe he had the look down as well as he could get, at least he had the courage to gain the weight for that role. I don't think he came off as a bumbling idiot, I think you're only dwelling on the scenes where he was totally whacked off of hallucinogens.

Kaiju Kitty - re: "where he was totally whacked". Especially the scene where they're driving and the attorney is hanging out of the window (over the vomit-encrusted passenger door) menacing the passengers in the car next to them asking if they wanted to purchase some heroin and laughing hysterically through his vomit-encrusted mouth. As an additional, the look on Benicio's face when he looks over at HST is pure gold; a magnificent job of being in the character of a drug-addled deranged lunatic. From my personal experience I can tell you the authenticity is perfect. See: https://youtu.be/HadwRxZfmx0?t=34
