Run Run Run
Hunters & Collectors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

General is a wise man
The General is a gun
Shake up this scribbly world
And run run run
He's laughing like a doctor
But I bit his crazy mouth
Believe this faithful daughter
As he squeezed into her house
And run run run

Gently as you squeeze us
Your jelly beans will be shocked
Squeeze this juice that's in us
And squeeze me till I drop
General is a wise man
The General is the shock
Flip Flop Ego

We go now Flip Flop
General is a wise man
General is a gun
General is this partner as we run run run
Shocked as you prickle me as you got to know too well
Too gentle you were wise man and I broke your holy bell

And run run run
Moto Coda

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Run Run Run" by Hunters & Collectors paint a vivid picture of a dangerous and chaotic world. The "General" is portrayed as both a wise man and a gun, suggesting that he has both wisdom and power. He is also described as laughing like a doctor, which is a jarring image that suggests a level of madness or cruelty. The singer, possibly a faithful daughter, is being squeezed and shocked, and is urged to run as a way of escaping this tumultuous world.

The lyrics are full of contradictions and paradoxes. The General is both wise and crazy, gentle and shocking, and a partner in crime. The imagery is chaotic, with jelly beans being shocked and juice being squeezed out of people. The line "too gentle you were wise man and I broke your holy bell" is particularly powerful, suggesting that even those who are good and gentle can be broken by the violence and chaos of the world.

Overall, the lyrics of "Run Run Run" suggest a world that is both dangerous and fragile. The General represents both the wisdom and the violence that exist in this world, and the singer is caught in the middle, trying to escape the chaos by running away.

absolutely one of my fav Hunters tunes. so brilliant. this and Talking to a Stranger. and both on the same Album. what a treat. i bought this album when it came out. Run was a bonus EP wasnt it?  45rpm.

just remember how totally hypnotic and self-absorbing this song used to be - still is.  it mesmerizes you and takes you far off to other places.  very cool. Talking to a Stranger had similar elements.

remember seeing them live in the ealry 80's when this album was first out. non commercial and hard cutting edge to their sound like early Models  who were also brilliant at the time.  hard and edgy. experimental yes, brilliant.

alas the percussion player left and they did not do much off this album or other songs he played that huge water system gong on. pity.  then they decided to go to more 'grass roots' rhythms as Doug Falconer said (drummer). and it worked.  their commercial stuff was just a good. grindy and rhythmic with driving back beat. they didn't sell out their sound and carved a rock niche for themselves.

much under rated and deserved more intentional (& national) success really.

My hats off to the Hunters. truly inspirational.  tho the early stuff was the best. Stranger and Run my 2 favs. Yellow Tow-truck was fun too.

thankx heaps for the video.

This song is now over 40 years old, it blew me away (along with the whole album) when I was a kid, and it is still one of my favourite Aussie songs today. We don't make music like this anymore, more's the pity.

@soulminer

Nobody makes tracks like this in 2020.Extremely intense stuff.

Remains 1 of the most amazing tunes I've ever heard.

The relationship between Perano, Falkner and Archer was just brilliant

I'm working in a servo in Albury, it's 1988. Xmas traffic is nuts, driveway with 12 pumps all going flat out all day. I've got 2 coworkers with me serving. In amongst the chaos hunters walk through the doors and I immediately recognise them. My coworkers serve them because I'm just standing there like a stunned mullet. Mouth half open, motionless, frozen. They pay for fuel, get some munchies etc and coworkers do the transactions. Mark Seymour seemed to be the only one to notice I'm stuck. Gives a bit of a nod and they all file back out...... finally I can take a breath. First thing I say to coworkers is do you know who that was? They look at each other and back and answer no.... hunters and collectors!!!! They had no idea. Fuck.... I had a friend introduce me to them with this song..... second half base n percussion over and over again

@techozinfo

This is one of the best Hunnas songs which they never plays live after about 84. Very emotive tune. love it

Indeed, at that time H&C should have been on Flying Nun. Best YouPube comment I've read all year!

I happened on a cassette tape of this "white label" album in a music store in Wash, D.C....must have been summer '82. Played it over and over on the drive home to Kansas, love every song, wish they had stayed visceral. This album is the main reason I longed to emigrate to Australia for so many years, still do, too old now. Anyway, we have our own "troubles" brewing here, better stay for the fight!

Heard this one night on JJJ after a good joint driving in outer Perth in the 80s. What a great DRIVE.
