After recording their first album, which featured the single Talking to a Stranger, the band traveled to Germany to record with famed producer Conny Plank. In 1984, the band reorganized, adding a three-piece horn section and losing the second guitarist. By 1986, the band's style was moving away from the sweat-drenched rhythmic jams of their early days to a more song-centered aproach centered on Seymour (whose younger brother Nick was a member of Crowded House). Throw Your Arms Around Me was a successful single in many countries.
The band was never able to match the worldwide attention they reached in 1986, though they continued to record with considerable success in Australia, and maintained a loyal fanbase elsewhere.
They broke up in 1998, but returned to play one concert on 14 March 2009 for "Sound Relief" at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which was a multi-venue rock music concert in support of relief for the Victorian Bushfire Crisis.
What Are You Waiting For?
Hunters & Collectors Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You need what you take
You think of all the love
And all the money you make
One, two maybe three times more
Around again to the nail on your door
The door is open
You’re too brutish
You look like me
Kiss you on the mouth
Behind your back
Do the dirty on you
Backdoor attack
Look at ya!
You’re dreaming again
You’re running out of reasons
You’re running out of time
Ya got a good thing going
So what are you waiting, what are you waiting for?
The door was open
Can’t you see
The dealer with the dagger baby looks like me
Nothing changes
You’re dreaming again
Something must be broken
‘Cause the butcher’s broken in
You got what you need
You need what you take
You think of all the love
And all the money you make
One, two maybe three times more
Around again to the nail on your door
The door is open
Can’t you see
The dealer with the dagger baby looks like me
Kiss you on the mouth
Behind your back
Do the dirty on you back door attack
Yeh you’re dreaming again
Dreaming again
You’re running out of reasons
You’re running out of time
Ya got a good thing going
So what are you waiting, what are you waiting
What are you waiting for?
You’re running out of reasons
You’re running out of time
Ya got a good thing going
So what are you waiting, what are you waiting
What are you waiting, what are you waiting for?
The song opens with a powerful statement about the human condition - we always want more than what we have, and we will do whatever it takes to get it. This is evident in the lyrics "You got what you need, you need what you take," which suggest that even when we have everything we require, we are still unsatisfied and feel the need to take more. The line "You think of all the love and all the money you make" highlights the two primary motivators for human behavior and how those motivations are often at odds with each other.
The second verse creates a picture of a person who is unreliable and untrustworthy. They are compared to the singer, who is similarly brutish, and it is suggested that they may even have a romantic relationship. The lines "Kiss you on the mouth behind your back, do the dirty on you, backdoor attack" indicate a person who is not only dishonest but also malicious. The third verse brings back the dealer with the dagger (who looks like the singer) and suggests that this person is responsible for the one who has broken in. This could be interpreted in a number of ways, but it seems likely that the "butcher" is the person who has broken in and is responsible for the chaos that has ensued.
Overall, "What Are You Waiting For?" is a song about dissatisfaction, greed, and untrustworthiness. It suggests that humans will always want more than what they have, and that this desire can lead to dishonesty and even violence. Despite this, the song encourages the listener to take action and make the most of what they have, rather than waiting for something better to come along.
