Mercy
Hurts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lead me in chains
Strip me of shame
Caress me with pain
Cause I'm down on my knees
And I'm begging you please as you say

Don't cry mercy
There's too much pain to come
Don't cry mercy
M.E.R.C.Y

Fill me with rage
Bleed me dry
Feed me your hate
In the echoing silence
I shiver each time that you say
M.E.R.C.Y

Don't cry mercy
There's too much pain to come
Don't cry mercy
M.E.R.C.Y
M.E.R.C.Y

(Ahhhh)

M.E.R.C.Y
M.E.R.C.Y
M.E.R.C.Y
M.E.R.C.Y

Don't cry mercy
There's too much pain to come
Don't cry mercy
M.E.R.C.Y
M.E.R.C.Y

Don't cry mercy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Hurts's song Mercy suggest a theme of BDSM and submission, as the lead singer sings about being led in chains, stripped of shame, and even caressed with pain. The chorus of the song, "Don't cry mercy, there's too much pain to come," implies a sense of pleasure in pain, as well as a certain level of control exhibited by the dominant partner in the relationship. The use of the initials of the word "mercy" in the chorus, M.E.R.C.Y, also reinforces the idea of power dynamics, as the dominant partner gives the submissive partner permission to experience pain and humiliation.

One of the greatest songs of the past decade, especially for those '80's children out there. This song is so right on every level. Hurts has many smashing songs that touch upon these same aural sensibilities, but "Mercy" is the violent culmination of their entire creative energy up until this point in their songwriting career. Fans of Depeche Mode, Alphaville, Ultravox, Bronski Beat, etc. will immediately recognize the forward passion in this tune. Is it their most beautiful song? No. Is it their most accomplished song? No. But there is an edginess, a raw razor blade swirling to this which will make it stick with you much longer than all of their others. "Mercy" is sheer brilliance.
