Water
Hurts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Innocent, they swim
I tell them 'no'
They just dive right in
But do they know?

It's a long way down
When you're alone
And there's no air or sound
Down below the surface

There's something in the water
I do not feel safe
It always feels like torture
To be this close

I wish that I was stronger
I'd separate the waves
Not just let the water
Take me away

There was a time I'd dip my feet
And it would roll off my skin
Now every time I get close to the edge
I'm scared of falling in

'Cause I don't want to be stranded again
On my own
When the tide comes in
And pulls me below the surface

There's something in the water
I do not feel safe
It always feel like torture
To be this close

I wish that I was stronger
I'd separate the waves
Not just let the water take me away

Verona
Verona
From the first time that I saw you
Verona, I knew
That tomorrow would be different
With a lady like you

Verona
Verona

From the first time that I saw you
Verona, I knew

That tomorrow would be different
With a lady like you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Hurts's song The Water seem to be about several different themes. At first, the singer describes how innocent people just dive into the water without knowing what's really down there. The lyrics suggest that the water is a metaphor for something deeper and more dangerous than what meets the eye. The second verse reinforces this idea, as the singer talks about how the water scares them and how they don't want to be stranded again. This implies that the water might represent a past trauma that the singer is still dealing with.

The chorus then emphasizes the singer's fear and lack of control. They wish they were stronger so they could "separate the waves" and not let the water take them away. There's also a sense of torture or pain associated with being close to the water, which reinforces the idea that it represents something negative or dangerous.

The final section of the lyrics seems to switch gears entirely, as the singer starts talking about a woman named Verona. The lyrics here seem to be more about hope and a better future, as the singer implies that meeting Verona has changed their perspective and made them believe that tomorrow will be different. However, the connection between this section and the rest of the song is unclear.

Overall, The Water is a moody, atmospheric song that uses water as a powerful metaphor for fear, trauma, and lack of control. The lyrics evoke a sense of danger and unease, but also suggest that there might be hope for a better future.

First time I heard Hurts was laying on a couch 6am in the morning three years ago. I was sort of passed away, and MTV was on in the background. I remebering opening my eyes to one of their songs, and I told myself "remeber to look this group up later". One of the best decisions of my life so far.

After playing the album endlessly since I got it a month ago, this has gradually become my favourite song on the album. Not one synth on this song, BTW - genuine strings all the way. Bloody amazing.
