Since HYDE keeps his personal information scarce, much about him is either unknown or unofficial, including his real name, purported to be Hideto Takarai. He confirmed his birthdate (January 29, 1969) in an interview for the 2002 March issue of Rockin On Japan.
HYDE's debut as a solo artist was in October 2001, when he released his first solo single, Evergreen. After two more singles, Angel's Tale and Shallow Sleep, HYDE released his first solo album, ballad-filled ROENTGEN, in March 2002. An overseas edition featuring English lyrics was released in July. His next two singles, HELLO and HORIZON, both including a b-side track not found on any album, were released prior to his second album, rockish 666, all in late 2003.
While reuniting with L'Arc~en~Ciel after a 3 year hiatus, HYDE continued his solo career. He composed the music for the song Glamorous Sky, sung by 中島美嘉 (Mika Nakashima) and to be used in the movie NANA. HYDE's next single Countdown was released in October 2005, it included Japanese & English versions of the title song. Another single, Season's Call, was used as the second opening theme to the anime show Blood+, starting in January 2006. The single was released in February. Third album FAITH was released in April, and it can be describes as hard rock with religious touch. The album was accompanied by a five-month tour with many locations in Japan, and four concerts in California, USA. Following the completion of the tour, a DVD of the concerts was released in November.
In addition to his musical career, HYDE has also starred in movies Moon Child and 下弦の月 (Kagen no Tsuki, also known as Last Quarter).
In early 2008, HYDE formed a new unit, VAMPS, with his fellow guitarist K.A.Z – and released a photobook ominously named HYDE IS DEAD.

(Lyrics: Hyde & Lynne Hobday)
Lord, please shine your light down upon me
Lord, grant me good fortune don't shun me
Take all this unhappiness from me
Say, am I crazy?
Now Lord, save me a place there upon the ark
I have been wandering in the dark
Put me into your collection
Lord, am I not worth your salvation?
It's all masquerade
Just who is who, I can't say
Don't leave me in the cold
Just who is fake, who's real??
God bless me!
So lord, why do you watch from the sidelines?
War, it's being fought on the frontlines
Say what is your final intention?
Lord, I've kinda lost my conviction
It's all a masquerade
Just who is who, I can't say
Don't leave in the cold
Just who is fake, who is real??
God bless me!
(Bless)
Why do we have a word for truth
When the whole damn world's an April fool
How come we find an antidote
When germs grow fast and break rules?
Why do I soil my clean white shoes
When it wont be long before they're old and word
Are you sad or are you happy
How this pretension makes me yawn
God bless me!
It's all a masquerade
Just who is who, I can't say
Don't leave me in the cold
Just who is fake, who's real??
It's all a masquerade
Just who is who, I can't say
Don't leave me in the cold
Just who is fake, who's real??
God bless me!
The song "Masquerade" by Hyde is about the confusion and frustration that comes with trying to navigate through the masks that people wear and determining who is genuine and who is not. The lyrics start with a plea to God to grant favor and remove unhappiness, which is followed by a hope for salvation in the midst of feeling lost in the darkness. The "ark" mentioned in the song could signify the journey to salvation, and the realization that not everyone will make it on this journey.
As the song progresses, Hyde questions why God seems to be watching from the sidelines while wars and battles continue on the frontlines. The lyrics express a loss of faith as it becomes increasingly difficult to differentiate between what is real and what is fake. The chorus repeats the phrase "It's all a masquerade" which could be interpreted as the deception and facade that people put up to hide their true selves.
The last verse poses a series of questions about the world's contradictions and hypocrisies, such as why we have a word for truth when it often seems elusive, or why we try to find antidotes for germs when they still break rules. This frustration with the ambiguities and pretensions of the world is summed up in the final refrain of "God bless me!"
