Lightning Bolts and Man Hands
Hymie's Basement Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Andrew broder:
You can spend your time trying to not think about certain things.
Hoping no one challenges your wonderful lie of the wisdom of daydreams.
You can pluck the spot right off a ladybug's back,
Put it on the ground and crawl right in.

Why?:
Most men resent their left hand;
The bony knuckles, the second rate super hero thumb so broad and masculine.
Overshadowed and rendered sedintary by its more active opposite companion,
But i've got my mother's hands and...

Andrew broder:
You can stumble through the stars,
You can choke on a snow flake.
You can slip on a banana peel to death.
So spake the hopeless ape.
You can get struck by a lightning bolt.
A lightning bolt doesn't know its own strength,
You'll pull a purr out of her if it kills you,
Just you wait.

Why?:
Aren't babies born with creases in their palms
Way before you think the hand's most frequent movements have been established?
Have humans evolved to be born to hold hammers and swords?

In the years to come, will we see the emergence of a strong computer key finger?
In the years to come, will we see a flattened mousepad palm?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Hymie's Basement's song "Lightning Bolts and Man Hands" address the idea of contemplating certain things in life, such as the wisdom of daydreams, and the resentment some people may have towards their own body, specifically their left hand. The lines "Most men resent their left hand; The bony knuckles, the second rate super hero thumb so broad and masculine," highlight this idea. However, the singer in the song has a different perspective, saying they cherish their mother's hands. The song also alludes to the unpredictability of life, with lines such as "You can get struck by a lightning bolt. A lightning bolt doesn't know its own strength," showing that anything can happen at any moment in time.

The lyrics also focus on the evolution of human hands and how they are used. The lines, "Aren't babies born with creases in their palms, Way before you think the hand's most frequent movements have been established?," questions the existence of specific hand movements, and whether they are only developed after birth. The song also speculates on the future of human hands, pondering if certain hand movements will become obsolete with the evolution of technology. The lyrics explore deeper concepts of human existence and evolution, while also showcasing the unpredictability of life.

This song cheers me up when I'm down... A fan all the way from Africa

@dragonheart81vids

this is such an amazing video IMO, really reflects the kind of ‘eerie everyday’ theme I see the music as having.

Hymie’s Basement is such a unique, emotional experience...I love all of Yoni’s other projects, and am getting through Fog’s and the rest of anticon. (gradually!) but I feel that this collab has a raw, observational feel that hasn’t been seen before.

as much as I’d like them to collab again, I also want to appreciate this album as a one-off beautiful gem.
