I've Been Hurt
I-Mo-Jah Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Long time ago
A man road through these parts
A dangerous man
He had the skulls of everyone that done near crossed him adorning the hood of his Chevrolet
Legend has it
He still lurks in the shadows
Waiting
To strike
I’ve got my strap
Got my guitar
I threw my caution to the wind
Bet ya never thought I’d get this far
I got my steed
Old American steel
Got my lucky sevens face up
Strapped to the side of my wheels
I got my ride
I got my freedom
Ain’t got no soul to sell
So ya better not try to steal it
I take my time
I take my chances
Ain’t got no time for games
Or the high class silicone dances
I’ve been a beggar
A liar
A cheater and a thief
A broken
Pariah
Against my own beliefs
Just to see
Oh just to see
I’ve been a loner
A stoner
A psycho and a crook
A crier
A moaner
A deadbeat by the book
Just to see
Oh just to see
Some call me devil
Ol’ El Diablo
I’ve got one foot in the grave and the other on the gas so ¡cuidado!
Some call me hero
Some call me villain
I may look like a pauper
But I make far more than a killing
I’ve got my reasons
So understand me
You can judge all you want
But if you try to reprimand me
I’ll show a mirror
To all you see
And if you stare down long enough
You’ll just see me
Me
I’ve been a beggar
A liar
A cheater and a thief
A broken
Pariah
Against my own beliefs
Just to see
Oh just to see
I’ve been a loner
A stoner
A psycho and a crook
A crier
A moaner
A deadbeat by the book
Just to see
Oh just to see
Oh
I got my sights set
On Tijuana
I roll in with the tide
Roll up with the marijuana
And when I get there
Imma paint the town red
Take it from baby it ain’t bad to be crazy
But you might be better off dead
I’ve been a beggar
A liar
A cheater and a thief
A broken
Pariah
Against my own beliefs
Just to see
Oh just to see
I’ve been a loner
A stoner
A psycho and a crook
A crier
A moaner
A deadbeat by the book
Just to see
Oh just to see
I’ve been a beggar
A liar
A cheater and a thief
A broken
Pariah
Against my own beliefs
Just to see
Oh just to see
I’ve been a loner
A stoner
A psycho and a crook
A crier
A moaner
A deadbeat by the book

Just to see
Oh just to see

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of I-Mo-Jah’s song “I’ve Been Hurt” are about a man who has been through a lot in his life and is on a journey to take control of it. The opening lines suggest an ominous atmosphere with a tale about a dangerous man and his Chevrolet adorned with skulls. The singer introduces himself as someone who has been hurt in life and he has learned how to protect himself with a gun (“I’ve got my strap”). He throws caution to the wind and muses that he may surprise some with how far he has come. He has an American steel, “lucky sevens” on his car, and a thirst for riding and freedom. He warns anyone against stealing his soul, indicating his strong sense of self.

He has been a lot of things in his life: a beggar, liar, cheater, thief, broken, pariah, loner, stoner, psycho, crook, crier, moaner, and deadbeat. He acknowledges his faults but he is not apologetic because he has seen a lot and experienced much even against his beliefs. He is not one-sided as some call him Ol’ El Diablo, while for others, he is a hero. He knows that people judge him, but they cannot reprimand him because he has his reasoning. In the final section, the singer has his sights set on Tijuana and he feels comfortable with a bit of craziness. He has learned that it is okay to be crazy, but one might be better off dead. The final lines reinforce the theme of the song, repeating that he has been a beggar, liar, cheater, thief, broken, pariah, loner, stoner, psycho, crook, crier, moaner, and deadbeat “just to see”.
