Ok, just a note for those who think about taking iodine:
- in order for iodine to work, we are talking about taking mg's if it, not mcg...huge differencdle
- everyone should take iodine, it is not only for women
- if you have hot spots in your thyroid, it should NOT be taken as it can make it worse
- there is a proper protocol that should be done ideally before starting with high dose of iodine
- soecific vitamins, minerals should be taken along with iodine

Iodine helps to get rid of waste, metals of the body, so pregnant women should avoid starting with the protocol while being pregnant.
There are good and reliable sources about it, just read them.

And no, eating salt with iodine is not a sufficient amount 😃😃

I just started taking Iodine…3 teeny drops from a bottle every day in my morning shake. I cannot believe my skin tags have disappeared, large brown spots are disappearing from my hands and legs…I have diverticulitis flare ups and have noticed it is less or non existent. I wish I had taken it before I was diagnosed with stage 3 uterine cancer. That is another story because after the surgery…they couldn’t find any cancer. God healed me…as prayers went forth before the surgery. BUT…I am glad I found iodine! 👍❤️

Glad you are doing better! Weird, I had a sonogram of my uterus done due to bleeding and they found a “Large Cyst” The doctor recommend a Second sonogram three months later ( I told her to give me a chance to do home remedies before surgery). They couldn’t find it on the 2nd sonogram (3 months after I started taking Iodine). However, I was still bleeding here and there and decided to go for the DMC. Doctor did remove two small cysts but they never found the “large” one.

@faithahora The very first week…they started to flatten out and grow small in size. I’ve had one that my doctor would have to numb me with a needle and cauterize it off. He said they are caused by a “virus”. By the 3rd week…they disappeared. My husband is always a skeptic…but it impressed him a lot!

Dealing with toe fungus. I’ve been using it for 6 weeks. I’m finally starting to see healthy nails growing in after 20 years of dealing with it . Nothing else has worked including laser treatments. Just surround your nail with iodine every day or every other day!

@Beer Man it's an easy fix with the over the counter nail fungus treatment.

Use a nail cleaning tool to separate the end of your infected nail from the nail bed then trim it. Repeat that until the bad area of the nail is removed then treat the nail bed for 2 weeks and it will be gone. It's useless trying to treat it through the nail itself. 😉

@whatever my iodine comes with a plastic stick that’s attached to the lid. I just surround my nail with iodine. I do this 4-5 times a week once a day. Usually after a bath or shower. You won’t notice anything for about a month. But then one day you’ll notice healthy nails growing. You will need to continue this process until the nail is completely grown out. After nail is grown out only do this treatment for prevention purposes

Nothing is perfect, but I believe we'd all be in much better health overall if we stopped ingesting industrialized food. Please remember there are two kinds of iodine. One is for EXTERNAL use only. That is povidone iodine. It works great applied directly to the skin or used in a foot soak. The other type is for internal use. Lugol's iodine, kelp, nascent iodine, etc. Internal iodine is more expensive and can kill off any bacterial overgrowth in your gut. Start slow and work your way up in dosage.

@Blanca M I would suggest that you do some research about how important iodine is to DNA replication and for the immune system, to understand how the body uses iodine. Also, remember that if your fetus needs minerals, etc, it will be taken from your body if your diet does not contain enough. With my elderly mom, i had her use it as a foot soak so her body controlled the amount that was absorbed. Blessings.

Hi Dr. Berg, I just read the book "The Iodine crisis" by Linne Farrow and she said the sea kelp is a very poor and risky way to supplement Iodine. Iodoral or Lugol's Iodine is the way to go. What do you think about it?

Iodine has helped my periods go from a heavy flow and lasting up to 7 days sometimes, to now 3-4 days, low flow with one slightly heavier day.
No cramps, either! (Ditching tampons and using a menstrual cup also helps this.)

@happy ads I hope it helps! It took about 6 months of mostly consistent iodine usage to notice a difference but it’s worth it. Each month was a bit better than the last.
One other thing that helps with cramps and PMS is red raspberry leaf tea - has to be the leaf and not just a raspberry tea. I find mine at a local health food store. :)

I've used Lugol's Solution (SSKI) for years against diarrhea and germ protection when travelling (7 drops in a glass of water) and also to shrink breast lumps. I didn't know you could use it topically for warts etc and was also under the impression that you shouldn't take it internally for more than a week at a time. It would be nice to know a bit more about both types of iodine

@Leeanne Burchell Hi Leeanne. In addition to the Lugol's ( internal and on the breast) I'm taking supplements and herbs, doing a lot of research and reading, and using energy work. I've looked into hyperbaric oxygen and ozone therapies but put them in my back pocket to revisit if needed down the road. I will probably do vitamin C infusions this fall.
I made the decision early on that I would not do anything that will increase my stress about the mass. I had several strong stressors that led my body to develop it so I concentrate on healing rather than diagnosing and attacking with strong poisons. We have to listen to our body and do what feels right to each of us. I wish you wisdom in finding what is best for you.

In Australia many years ago Iodine was used to cleanse the teats of cows prior to milking. Obviously some of it ended up in the milk. It was discovered when this activity was discontinued that the numbers of Iodine deficient people increased greatly, now we are encouraged to use "Iodised salt" instead of normal table salt. Obviously those with high blood pressure are discouraged from using any salt at all.

In Poland Iodine solution was used to treat any skin damage in children. And it was a time when children were playing outside all day, so probably every single one of them was using iodine at least a every couple of days. There were no thyroid problems back then. So at least children had proper levels of iodine.

Thank you Dr. Berg for this great video! I am an RN and used to have adult acne. When I worked on a cardiac floor we would prep open heart patients with a povidone iodine body scrub in the shower. So I started using it to scrub my face and within a couple of days, no more acne! For the past 35 years I never break out unless I miss a day. Everyone I’ve told about this swears by it. (DON’T DO THIS IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO IODINE OR SHELLFISH. FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY ) You just buy a bottle of povidone iodine it’s in the bandage and wound care area of the pharmacy (don’t use tincture of iodine, it won’t wash off!). Then get a wet washcloth, use soap to make it sudsy, squirt a bit of iodine to make the suds orange, wash your face and rinse. If you have a more serious case of acne do this twice a day until your skin is clear, then just once a day to maintain. This is so much healthier than taking antibiotics and so much cheaper than all the fancy acne treatments. And it works.

I have been impressed by all the videos I have watched. I started the Keto diet and fasted and feel great. I got rid of almost all the food in my fridge and pantry that is not keto friendly, My husband is not on the keto diet and he basically fasts and eat very small meals, and exercises every day and is in excellent health We are both in our late 60’s. I was flabbergasted to find out that in UK table salt does not have added iodine, or at least it is extremely difficult to find. Having lived in Finland I took it for granted! Now I have to take seaweed supplement for it, not because I have any medical condition but just for general health and prevention.
I did add iodine in water when drinking water from streams, but it tastes foul anf long-term use can also cause problems.

My baby kept getting warts on her face, not many, just three, it wasn't big but still, we were concerned that it might get big with time and we might have to get rid of it by a surgery when she's big enough. I hate the though of surgery on her, I wanted to get rid of them naturally. When I seen this video, I searched on iodine based food and fed her more of it. Gradually, within 3 to 4 days, warts disappeared from her face. It is no more.

I've been using Atomodine iodine for over 4 years now. Until contracting Covid in January this year, while working at home with very limited exposure to others, I haven't had a cold or sinus infection in this time. I've also used it topically for various skin issues/wounds successfully. Only one side effect of I'm not careful, is too many drops 6-7, can cause intestinal issues because it can kill beneficial bacteria in the gut. Iodine used to be in our food, then it was replaced with bromide, a toxin to us, why?

I once was on a iodine rich diet and it backfired for me. It made my thyroid go into overdrive. But then again, I had thyroid issues before so it's complicated. Once again, balance is key to everything.

@Linda Salfen Read "Iodine: why you need it and why you can't live without it" by David Brownstein, this is the bible for iodine therapy. In a nutshell, Lugols solution or iodoral, 50 mgs for 1-2 months with salt loading when necessary to detox bromides and fluorides, then 12.5mgs maintenance doses every day is typical, but listen to your body.
Also, if you want to do this with the help of a practitioner (recommended) search "iodine literate doctors" for a list of doctors around the world who will follow this protocol with you and test your iodine and toxin levels every month or so

My daughter had this strange thing laying just under the skin on her temple. Had no idea what it was. She wouldn't let me pick it or try to squeeze it out because it was painful. So I decided to try Dr. Berg's wart and skin tag thing. I put iodine and fresh garlic on a bandaid and put it over the little bump at night. Took about 2 weeks but the thing started to come to the surface. Kept it up until she could eventually just pick it off. Still don't know what it was, it was black and hard as a rock. She never had an injuries so I don't think it was a peice of gravel. Anyway its gone and she just has a tiny little pink spot now.

My entire life I’ve suffered from estrogen dominance, ovarian and uterine cysts, and extreme keloid scarring (and life-threatening internal adhesions that “glued” all of my organs together) from all of the surgeries related to this. Try using Serraoeptaise 120,000. It is a protyolitic enzyme that eats up adhesions and scar tissue. Start at 2 twice a day work up higher. Some people take 9 or so a day. Key is you must take on empty stomach or it will just act as a food digester.

My last thyroid levels report was 0.994, I believe. Yes, I take Levothyroxine and my GP has me on .112 MCG per day. An endocrinologist had me on .125 MCG (micrograms) but the GP changed it back to a lower level. 🤷‍♀️ How much Iodine should I take per day to help my Thyroid help my body function my efficiently?

Stop drinking coffee and creamers and start drinking a ton of nettle tea. Also add a little bit of workout too. Eliminate all processed foods. That’s how I fixed mine.

My husband has Dupuytren’s Contracture, and this is working! Thank you so much, They told him the only cure was surgery. We picked up the iodine on Friday and with him using it 4 times a day, within 5 days he could open his hand, and within a week he could move his fingers. He still has a lot of contractures, but they are softening up and releasing. Please do a video on Dupuytren's Contracture by itself and put this on Youtube by the name. So little help is out there for this issue and a lot of people have it.

@Angus Lean , It has been 5 years since he could open his hand fully, or lay it so it was flatten or the fingers bent back. He had 3 fingers curling in, the pinkie the worse. It curled in quite a lot, though he could still use it and he tried to stretch it and exercise constantly. What is ironic is without photos to refer to, our memories are starting to disagree with the degree of how bad it was. His pinkie which was the worse, fully curled in, can now open but still has a ways to go, the other fingers are pretty much cleared up except for a node, that had been starting to form between his thumb and index which they say does NOT happen .... of course they did not say a $ 3.58 bottle of iodine woud fix it either. :) The doctor wanted it fully closed up before surgery, which was the only thing offered to him.

I started using organic sea kelp supplements. Its 60 capsules an a bottle and I take one a day. I haven't even finished the bottle but I can see my menstrual cycle starting to normalize. I drink kambucha and add sauerkraut to my everyday meals (all new to my diet). The changes in my body are amazing. This month I will buy Dim and see what will happen. I have a multi suppliment that has 225 micrograms iodine source is potassium iodide (table salt) then I also started taking another 100 micrograms source is kelp and seaweed. I have hashimoto's thyroiditis, and I took some multivitamins that contained iodine without realising. This sent my antibodies through the roof and caused even more damage to my thyroid. I would say if you have this condition be very careful with iodine, it's not always a good thing.

Yes, iodine helps to reduce and eliminate cystic acne. Worked for my skin before I’ve started keto. I would apply for 1-2 drops of iodine on that inflamed cyst 2-3 times per day and in 2 days that cyst inside of my skin would shrink and all surrounding inflammation would calm down. Since I am on keto the acne issue is pretty much not an issue anymore :).

Was it in pill form or drops? If drops, how do you swallow the Lugol's drops safely? I tried 15 drops in a glass of water & it burned the tissue in my mouth. Took 3 days to peel off and regenerate. Thank goodness I spit out most of it rather than swallow it. I can't imagine the damage it would have done to my stomach lining. All I can think of is that my dose was too large, since I've read of other people swallowing Lugol's without a problem.

I'll add point number 9. So great for restless legs syndrome at night. I had restless legs quite bad. One night, I couldn't lay down so I got up to get something to drink. Decided to add some drops of iodine in my drink. After 20 min, I could literally feel the nerves in my lags calm down. I now take it before bed and have better sleeps.

@r u real Yes, I am talking about mineral salts. And no, no doctor referred me to mineral salts. I have read several books on them. I, also, have a website that I use that provides the best mineral salts combos for different ailments. I believe the filler is acacia gum, because I was still drinking milk and eating corn products when the vitiligo was healing after stopping Levothyroxine. Hylands has acacia gum in their product, just like Levothyroxine and Leostrin birth control. I didn't know that acacia gum was the cause until a month ago. I have been off Hylands for a month, and the vitiligo is slowly reversing, again. I will be requesting allergy testing, so I can truly find the cause and have it put into my medical records. I have switched back to Jackson's mineral salt (vegan brand).

@JDS Spurlin I haven’t had issues with my RLS or insomnia, since Jan 2022. I did have surgery on my knee, while in the Marines. Magnesium alone did not take care of my RLS. when I started taking the phosphates, I was able to get off tramadol within 4 days of starting the phosphates, and got off baclofen and gabapentin within 14 days of starting the phosphates. I take Jackson’s mineral brand, as I realized 2 weeks I’m allergic to a filler in the Hylands mineral salt brand. I can’t take Levothyroxine and Loestrin BC as it has the same filler. This filler is the cause of my vitiligo, as the vitiligo was healing when I got off Levothyroxine.

Iodine didn’t work for my RLS; still take iodine. I had to use the 5 phosphate cell salts (calcium phosphate, magnesium phosphate, potassium phosphate, sodium phosphate, and ferrum phosphate); brand Jackson’s mineral salts. Stress/anxiety is a factor too RLS. Just thinking back, that it started when I was married; went away when I was in the Marines for 8 years, and it started back up when I got out of the Marines and had it for the last 10 1/2 years. Was able to get off all 3 of my meds (gabapentin, tramadol, and baclofen) with the help of the cell salts and fixed my insomnia in the process.

I LOVE iodine!! I add 5 drops of Nascent Iodine to my neti pot, and though sick for the past 10 days, it’s kept my nasal passages clear! I also nebulize 8 drops in a teaspoon of .1% hydrogen peroxide (in saline). I DO have a cough, but it has yet to get bad or keep me awake at night!

I also swish with a few drops of iodine (in a swish of water), and it got rid of pain I had been having for several weeks. I’ve heard it can heal over cavities also!

I watched a previous video of yours which showed iodine eliminating skin tags. I had a mole that grew out of nowhere on my temple and continued until it was massive. I used topical iodine on it and after several months, it completely eliminated it. I’ve worked outside in the Florida sun my whole life and had scabs on the back of my hands for years that would never heal. If you scraped off or cut off the scab, it would return. I assumed it was skin cancer, so I put iodine on those after seeing how well it worked on the mole. Sure enough, after several months those disappeared as well! Thank you so much.

Hi Dr. Berg,
I once worked for a holistic doctor who said I needed iodine. I was taking a pretty significant dose and it triggered Hashimoto’s. I was then told to avoid it at all costs. I’ve since heard conflicting opinions and I’d like to take it again. Question: 1) how do you know how much to take and 2) I’ve heard Lugol’s or potassium iodine is ideal. Thoughts?

A good holistic Dr would know that selenium and iodine are in a relationship where if you overdo one, you will deplete the other. That is why hashi patients are encouraged to test selenium before supplementing it since they are usually too high in iodine. The one thing he also forgot to mentio is that hashimotos was named for people of Japan who, despite eating high iodine, live in an area with very low soil selenium levels. They both need to be balanced to not have the thyroid go one way or the other.

You should take a natural iodine rather than a synthetic like lugol's. i buy little bottles of it and you only need 1 drop a day, and lasts like a year or more.

I applied iodine to a nasty open sore and it completely disappeared in a couple weeks time like it was never there. It was deep and through several layers of tissue. Not on me but someone else.

Thanks for this reminder, Dr. Berg. I have never thought I’d just using liquid iodine to test for deficiency. I’ve used Kelp capsules as a supplement to get trace minerals and iodine. You are right. It is an excellent source.

I know if you wipe up iodine with cheaper tissues that were not rinsed well after the bleaching process, the tissue turns purple because it reacts with the chlorine bleach residue. (I also get raw chapped nostrils if I use those cheaper tissues, most likely because of the chlorine residue irritating my skin.)

I also know that certain other chemicals will turn the iodine clear. I think acids react that way with iodine. The ascorbic acid may neutralize the iodine, or something.

That probably explains why my skin tags on neck and under breasts disappeared. (I take 3 drops orally daily of ionic iodine from potassium iodine = 225 mcg)

Dr. Berg, would someone like me, who had my thyroid removed due to a Papillary Carcinoma 21 years ago, benefit from a Iodine protocol treatment? I suffer from morbid obesity, always tired and chronic pain. Many thanks in advance.

I had cystic acne and oily skin from too much estrogen and everything I looked up online said the opposite, too much test was giving me the acne. It went away when taking DIM but maybe thats just covering up an iodine deficiency, I don't eat seafood often. I'll give it a try.

I've been using iodine drops on my forearm for a good while now, i increased from 1 drop a day to 3 drops. I've noticed that i've been craving sweet things much more now eventhough i never have. (i dont eat sugar i use stevia). I was wondering what was the cause?

In my country Iodine has been added to the salt that bakers use as well as (optionally) table salt. So we usually get enough this way.

This is excellent, thank you Dr Berg! We have wild kelp here which I collect and dry, (it stores exceptionally well) adding to stews, soups etc I’ve also used instead of pasta sheets to make lasagna.

I just take mine in vitamin form. You can get it at drugstores and some grocery stores or something similar to a Wal-Mart.

TheVineRhyme ... yes thank you ... the water here is very clean and we are aware of any bloom should it occasionally happen but the oyster beds etc wouldn’t be allowed if the water is at all contaminated.

I was using this, as you suggested, for fungal nails. It worked great BUT only noticed the warning after a few weeks NOT TO USE IF TAKING THYROID MEDICATION!!!

I have a severe allergy to shellfish, and multiple goiters on my thyroid. I have been reluctant to try iodine as my Dr said I should wear a medical alert for the allergy.
I read an article a few months ago that said the allergy to shellfish is usually to a protein and not the iodine. So I bought Lugol's and tried it (1 drop is all I use). No reaction! I have added selenium also and I am anxious to see if the goiters shrink on my next ultrasound. Thank you for all your knowledge.

Thyroid issues run in my family and I suspected for a long time I've had an issue as well due to lack of energy, swollen neck, and inability to lose weight among other things. I just got some iodine today took a 150 McG tablet and in about 45 minutes my energy went through the roof! I had more mental clarity and I felt a giant boost in my mood. I am so happy to have found this I cannot properly put it into words. Thank you doc!

@Nan Gee If doctor prescribed iodine he must have checked if it's safe. Normally they are afraid to do it. First of all you must have physically healthy thyroid (the size, no tumors etc). Many people with years of iodine deficiency have physical defects and for them iodine in high doses may be harmful. If you had a couple of USG checks and they were ok, then you shouldn't worry about it.
For me Iodine helped a lot - because synthetic T4 hormone was working as in other people with underactive thyroid - it helped for about a month and then the blood results were ok, but I was again all time sleepy and all that.
Now I'm constantly supplementing Iodine and it's better than it was. I stopped taking T4 years ago and didn't go back to doctors. It's because I was at 6 different endocrinologists during 5 years and they all just blindly prescribed T4 and didn't want to hear about examining me properly. They didn't care if it's adrenal fatigue, didn't check iodine levels, conversion rates. One even refused sending me for more tests after I asked for it. Doctors in my country think that the only thing to do for underactive thyroid is prescribing T4 and checking blood results. Of course I "diagnosed" myself with thyroid problem, and went straight to endocrinologist, because other doctors were looking for infections that weren't there...
I hope this helps someone. I'd gladly go to a doctor that would take care of me properly, but simply couldn't find one. Doing all that on my own I may do something wrong, but what can I do.

@Nan Gee I'm not a doctor, but ensuring you have regular blood work done might be the way to go. Chat with your doctor to get him on the same page. There is a lot of info online about it.

@Hilary C Geez, now I'm worried. I have Hashimoto's and my doc has me taking 2% Lugol's Solution daily. I questioned why I should take it with Hashi's and he said it would be safe.

Nic Allen If you have thyroid issues, you really need a thorough consultation with your doctor. Iodine for people with thyroid issues may not be wise as it triggers Hashimotos and other Thyroid issues. Yes, whilst the Japanese have those low occurence rates of cancers Dr. Berg stated in this video , they also have have the highest levels of Hashimoto’s in the world. A global spike in iodine consumption over the past two decades, exactly parallels the skyrocketing increase in thyroid diseases such as hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s, and thyroid cancer.

I had a similar experience after spending a day tubing in a saltwater lake. Energy randomly went through the roof when I got home, went out back and ran around. Normally I'd be beat after a active day trip like that.

Dr. Berg. I have had acne since the age of 12, I am now 65. I found iodine, even 8n salt makes my acne much, much worse. I find it hard to believe it reduces acne. It makes mine much worse.

I've got an issue with my parotid glands where they form mucous plugs and it can be annoying and painful to squeeze/manipulate them out of the duct. I've been eating nori and kelp a few times a week lately, and I've actually noticed that I haven't had blockages as frequently! I hadn't watched this video yet, it's interesting to find out that my increased consumption of iodine rich foods might actually be helping solve this issue I've had for the last 7 years!

True story; I’ve been taking lugols iodine with selenium drops over the past year, and I now test normal on my thyroid where it was showing slow. My mood and acne disappeared during menstruation. I had a pretty severe deficiency since I don’t consume iodized salt—my initial iodine patch test absorbed within a half hour. I need to do another one to see where I’m at. Good stuff!!

Yes both of mine are liquid (iodine and selenium—should be taken together) but they come in capsules too. You can buy them over the counter at an organic health food store.

I am not a healthcare professional, so I strongly recommend seeing a naturopathic doctor who can provide exact recommendations because I know everybody is different. I take quite a high dose and my body is receptive to that but that may or may not work for you. Also, I was not taking any prescription medication prior and chose the naturopathic route before getting on medication. It may be a different journey/regimen if you are already taking medication.

@Char NJ yes it was hypo and I notice that I crave it in the morning. My body likes it, but everyone is different too, as you know.

I take it first thing in the morning and get an energy boost, and notice I’m kinda lethargic if I quit taking it after a week or so. It’s definitely a continuous thing, but levothyroxine will cause the body to stop producing its own TSH so I prefer a supplement to keep my own working as long as possible. So far, I’m feeling good and will stay the course! Good luck 🍀👍

So was your thyroid condition hypothyroidism? If so my daughter is hypo. Our natural medicine Dr. recommended a formula he formulated himself but my daughter doesn't like taking it since it's in capsule. She use to take levothyroxine in small tablets and what she was use to and now that we're switched to natural medicine, she liked the lil levo tabs but I don't want her taking those so I will let her try some Lugol's iodine & selenium drops instead and maybe put it in her drinks or food. She does have problems with acne.
