The Neo-Progressive movement
IQ were one of a small number of British bands formed during the early 1980s, including Marillion, Pendragon, Twelfth Night, Pallas, and Quasar that continued with the progressive rock style forsaken by 1970s bands such as Genesis and Yes. The music press coined the phrase neo-progressive to describe these bands, often accusing them of simply copying the styles of other bands. This accusation has been strenuously denied by IQ, which are against of the use of the term "neo progressive"and claim to have a wide-ranging and eclectic selection of musical influences.
The line-up
From 1982, the line-up consisted of Peter Nicholls (vocals), Mike Holmes (guitar), Martin Orford (keyboards), Paul Cook (drums), and Tim Esau (bass). Nicholls left in 1984 to form a new band, Niadem's Ghost, and was replaced by Paul (P. L.) Menel, but subsequently returned in 1990. Nicholls also created the cover art for most of the albums on which he appears. In early 2005 member Paul Cook left the band, and was replaced on drums by Andy Edwards. On 20 July 2007 Martin Orford announced he was leaving IQ and was replaced by Mark Westworth from prog-rock band Darwin's Radio. Despite his departure, Martin continues to run the band's label GEP and is still closely involved with the band, although he announced in late 2008 that he will leave the music business entirely and hand over the reins of GEP to someone else (as yet unnamed) in early 2009.
Musical style
The band's musical style, especially earlier in their career, was reminiscent of Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett era Genesis because of singer Peter Nicholls' vocal and stage-presence similarities to Gabriel and keyboardist Martin Orford's grandiose keyboarding. However, guitarist Mike Holmes' role was far more assertive in the band, giving them a harder edge musically. After Nicholls' departure, the band's style became increasingly commercial and radio-friendly - albeit without much success - on Nomzamo (1987) and Are You Sitting Comfortably? (1989), although each album still featured some progressive rock-style tracks. Beginning with Nicholls's return on 1993's Ever, the band returned to its prog rock roots, with longer tracks featuring intricate arrangements and complex musicianship.

Subterranea
I.Q. Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A silhouette set among the
Badlands paved with stone
Photographs, fingerprints, fragile refugee
Higher rise fire in the sky society
Can I hold on, can I believe in
All the things you are?
Cadillac heart attack, back of this beyond
Pusher king, tv queen, accommodating blonde
At Traitors Gate while you
Wait gender reassigned
The blindfold leads the blind
Can I hold on? I cannot count them
All the things you are
Were I stronger I'd hold out longer in Subterranea
Without the walls, comfort is freezing in my veins
And caught within chemical rain
My dreams have turned against me
And fatally have fenced me in
Above me cold light and below me over all
The time I've lost, how can I know?
So I keep forgetting what I am half recalling
On a bed of fallen flowers
Hold me now as I was held before
Powerhouse, scared vows, trigger happy punk
Driven by hidden eyes and figure hugging junk
Heaven knows if I'm close, am I unreleased?
If I'm in hell I may as well be famine to the feast
Can I hold on, can I belong to
All the things you are?
There's no sane in, chaos reigns in Subterranea
The lyrics in I.Q's song "Subterranea" describe the feeling of being lost and disoriented in an unfamiliar and hostile world. The singer reflects on their past life from which they have been abruptly thrown off and is now in the midst of a society rife with conflicts and contradictions. There is a sense of chaos and confusion that sets in, as the singer observes the people around them and their lives. The first verse speaks about their fragile state of mind, as they try to make sense of their new surroundings. It also highlights the stark difference between their past and present lives. The second verse highlights the corrupt and violent aspects of society they have been thrown into, especially the inequality and the exploitation that they encounter.
Throughout the song, the singer questions their ability to adapt to their current situation or hold onto their values and ideals. They wonder if they can continue to believe in the things they once did, and if their beliefs have any value in this new world. The last verse speaks about the various forces and people in this society, leading to the singer feeling isolated and overwhelmed.
In essence, "Subterranea" is a song about the struggles of fitting into an unfamiliar and somewhat dystopian world, grappling with chaos and corruption, and finding a way to hold onto one's beliefs and values despite the overwhelming obstacles.

I just love This IQ album. How I loved This band since their early years.. Pallas, Pendragon and of course Marillion did I survived the death of prog rock! Our neo prog rock bands did made our music survived! 🥰 Of course we did not forgot the incredible albums what ELP, Genesis, Yes and others did in their prime times on the 70-ies!
