I just read the book and it was great. I like how Jekyll and Hyde are not revealed to be the same until the very end and that Hyde wasn’t so much a separate personality but Jekyll, albeit without any inhibitions. So the original novel is practically a deconstruction of every single movie inspired by it.

I've read that book. In the final chapter Dr. Jekyll was still in Jekyll form when he was writing his confession. I believe he had just finished writing it when Mr. Utterson and his cousin saw him sitting at the window. I always believed that Jekyll had always had a wild streak in him. But he had to repress it because of Victorian society. Only then as Hyde he felt free to be wicked!

Well-researched and great archive footage. Enjoyed it and learned a bit. One thing that was missing was that in the novella, the reader doesn't learn that Jekyll is Hyde until near the end. It was a surprise ending. But once the cat was out of the bag, stage and screen directors couldn't maintain the surprise, and instead, had to rework the story so that the transformations from Jekyll to Hyde took center stage.

This was wonderful, thank you. So many people think Jekyll is good and Hyde is bad or that it's some split personality which drives me nutters, because it's as you said the same bloody man just wanting to do what he wants in a supressed society. That said I hate the fact the movies always get it wrong for it ruins the point. Split personalities are so basic, and this is far deeper. Jekyll is my hero!

I assigned a more of an alcoholic alter ego to Jekyll and Hyde. Like the allergic reaction to alcohol. A strange terrifying reaction where the inebriated and sober man so different in all ways. A similar interpretation to Steven King's character of Jack in The Shining with the alcohol relapse creating holy hell. I'm biased because I am also allergic to alcohol. I break out in handcuffs.

Actually Jekyll being addicted to turning into Hyde is at one or two points in the novel almost compared to an addiction like alcoholism or a drug addiction as when Jekyll says to Utterson "I can be rid of Hyde any moment I choose." which is the rational an addict will always give in thinking he can control his addiction which he just about always never can with that kind of a mindset.

Jekyl does refer in the first person a lot, to show that there is no two, it’s not just black and white but gray. They are both one, Hyde just represents the shadow. The repressed thoughts and qualities we deem unfit to present to the world. But even if they may seem as good and evil, there becomes a mix in it. Jekyll wakes up as Hyde to show there is no desperate entities. He has always had Hyde. And the evil was beginning to overshadow the good because jekyl himself was selfish to disguise himself just to go and indulge in his dark desires.

R.L.S likely did have T.B.(although it was called "consumption").
He was also known to visit the brothels and pubs of the lower classes. His wealthy Victorian Father did not approve of this behaviour. R.L.S had T.B symptoms since he was young-coughing up blood and weakness.He was known to self medicate with alcohol and opiates. I have read several of his stories and wish you could have quoted directly from the text a little more than the film/theatre adaptations.
Mr.Hyde does not physically appear as a "monster". In the book he is described as a small, limping,mean man wearing clothes that are too big for him.

Actually in the book Hyde is described as "hardly human" and more a troglodyte (underground creature) and as having a hint of disfigurement even though witnesses are at a loss as to describe it exactly, and being someone that brings out pure hatred and discomfort and even when viewed from a distance there is just something "wrong" about him in the same sense that a haunted house has something off and uncomfortable about it.
I always considered Hyde as almost a take on Darwin's theory of evolution (which was still a controversial topic even back in Stevenson's time of the novel in the mid 1880's)
and being something of an evolutionary throwback.

I consider that Jekyll was consuming meth.

In the book, an element is described as "white crystalines salts" by Dr Jekyll and it is also known that the doctor scolds chemists for the most pure of those salts.

Perhaps R.L. Stevenson wrote about the effects of meth without knowing what it was.
