After Every Party I Die
IAMX Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're living but you've got no soul
You captivate but you hold no weight at all
So watch as I start to smile

You're duller than you think you're deep
You aggravate but you always start to speak
So watch as I start to smile
After every party I die
After every party I die

The morning breaks us up inside
Payback, execution, killing time
So watch as I start to smile

There's something that you think you need
Trying your best to sleep at cocaine speed
So watch as I start to smile

After every party I die
(Die after every party)
After every party I die
(Die after every party)

You're living but you've got no soul
You captivate but you hold no weight at all
So watch as I start to smile

Smile, smile, smile, smile
Smile, smile, smile, smile
Smile, smile, smile, smile

After every party I die
(Die after every party)
After every party I die
(Die after every party)

After every party I die
(I die after every party)
After every party I die
(I die after every party)

I die after every party
I die after every party

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to IAMX's "After Every Party I Die" paint a picture of someone who is living life without passion or purpose. The first few lines describe a person who appears to have everything they need to thrive, but lacks an essential component: soul. This person is captivating, but ultimately doesn't hold any weight or substance. The singer acknowledges this dynamic and decides that they will choose to smile despite it all.

As the lyrics continue, the song delves deeper into the idea that this person is trying to fill an internal void with external substances like cocaine and partying. The morning after a party is a stark reminder of the emptiness they feel despite their attempts to fill it. The singer acknowledges the urge to try to find something they think they need, but ultimately decides to smile instead.

The chorus is haunting, with the repetition of the phrase "After every party, I die." This suggests that the party lifestyle and the attempts to find meaning in external sources ultimately lead to a kind of spiritual death. The song ends on a note of finality, with the repeated phrase "I die after every party," suggesting that this cycle will repeat again and again.

Overall, "After Every Party I Die" can be interpreted as a cautionary tale about the dangers of seeking fulfillment in external sources, rather than from within. The singer recognizes the insufficiency of partying and drugs as a means of finding meaning, and chooses instead to find joy in the present moment, even without the promise of a lasting solution.

I interpret this song as follows:

The singer attends a wild party one night, and an extremely popular, charismatic, charming person is there that everyone loves, admires, and enjoys engaging with. However, the singer can see right through this person's facade. ("you captivate, but you hold no weight at all") They recognize just how typical and even grating and annoying this person is beneath their mask of high notoriety. They can recognize the inner toxicity, self-absorption, and possibly even some self- loathing that this person is hiding beneath the shell of trying to appear perfect. The singer is not very fond of the person, but once the party has ended, they take this person home anyway or go to their place and have sex with them merely for the power trip.

After this night of shallow pleasure, both the singer and the person become trapped in this fucked up, abusive dynamic of hating each other, but still using each other to fulfill their sexual needs. They consistently try to manipulate, one up, dominate, and break down each other, until both of their mental states have further spiraled into chaos.

I wonder if it's about that terrible feeling of emptiness you get after a drunk night out with people you don't really care about, or simply about hangover.

Jason Shannon

cerberus_94 Yep. "Trying to sleep that cocaine speed...".
The only Sneaker Pimps song to get an IAMX rendition.

To me it's about the emptiness and I'm sure that was his intention as well. Later on his opened up about his difficulties with depression and cognitive disorders.
