Vortex, or simply Vortex, is the current vocalist and bassist of the progressive black metal band Borknagar and the vocalist and guitarist of the doom metal band Lamented Souls. Previously he has also been the vocalist of avant-garde metal band Arcturus and the bassist and background vocalist of the symphonic black metal band Dimmu Borgir.
In 2011, Simen Hestnæs began his solo project. He is also in a new band called Artisan, featuring Mustis (ex-Dimmu Borgir) on keyboards, Asgeir Michelson (Spiral Architect) on drums, Jens F. Ryland (Borknagar) on guitars and Vortex himself on vocals and bass.

Two years ago I would go on about how much I wanted him out of Dimmu, back in Borknagar, and making a solo album. All three wishes came through. Put him in another Arcturus album and I can die a happy man.

This is just incredible instrumentation, singing, everything. I dont care what genre you call it, its just straight up kick ass music. Dimmu made a huge mistake letting dude get away, but at the same time you cant keep talent locked down. The man certainly does more than hold his own. One of my favorite metallers ever!

While I think that the last Dimmu album was quite okay for a mainstream metal release THIS is definitely way more interesting. One of the best and most fresh sounding releases in 2011. I like the vocals and the overall sound - a must have ! Looking forward to this album !
