Bitter Tears
INXS Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the mist
Of my endless search
The best in life
Becomes clear

The rest just begins to fade by itself
That's a trick I learnt, though it took so long
Bitter tears taste so sweet
I'm seein' my way for the first time in years
When the love around begins to suffer
And you can't find love in one, in one another
Push away those bitter tears, bitter tears

And I thought I was doin' no wrong
No wrong
And I thought I was doin' no wrong
No wrong

In the hour
Of your needs
Lips are tremblin' 'cause you're gonna be free
Realize what we're doin' here
The time is right to kill your fears

Bitter tears taste so sweet
I'm seein' my way for the first time in years
When the love around begins to suffer
And you can't find love in one, in one another
Push away those bitter tears, bitter tears

And I thought I was doin' no wrong, wrong, yeah
Hey
Push away those bitter tears
Push away those bitter tears
Push away those bitter tears
Push away those bitter tears, yeah

That's what they call doin' no wrong
That's what they call doin' no wrong

Push away those bitter tears, yeah
Push away those bitter tears
Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh
Push away, push away those bitter tears
Uh-huh, yeah

Hey
That's what they call doin' no wrong

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to INXS's song Bitter Tears paint a vivid picture of someone coming to terms with the reality of their life. The singer is in the midst of a search for meaning and purpose, but as they go deeper, they begin to recognize that the best things in life start to become clear. The rest of it, the meaningless things, begin to fade away. This realization was not easy to come by, but it is one that took a long time to learn, and the singer seems to have found some sort of peace with it.

The song seems to be about the bitterness and sweetness that come with letting go of something that once meant a lot to you. The singer has come to terms with a situation where the love around them is suffering, they cannot find love in one another, and they are now experiencing bitter tears. However, there is a sense of hope in the lyrics as the singer encourages themselves and others to push away these bitter tears, which ultimately lead to their own liberation. The lyrics are also about recognizing and accepting that sometimes you can think you are doing no wrong, but in fact, you are.

Overall, Bitter Tears is a powerful song about acceptance, growth, and ultimately finding happiness in the midst of letting go. It encourages listeners to embrace change and let go of things that no longer serve them.

@geebeck

INXS doesn't get the credit they deserve for their talent as songwriters (Michael and Andrew) and musicians.

@Soaptoaster

There still is no comparison to Hutchence's vocal power and consistency. He utterly owned the vocal range and control, live and in studio. Creative, nuanced. He's a top 8 all-time rock vocalist, no doubt about it. Maybe top 5.

And INXS belongs in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It's inconceivable to me that they are not.

@brooklily7150

Exactly! That voice is hypnotic

@dalton7145

Maybe new age top 5, but never top 5 Rock. I agree they belong in HOF, they were huge in 80's and 90's, and I'm not even that big of a fan, although I do really like 3 or 4 of their songs. I can't help but think there might have been fowl play in his death, by maybe his ladies ex..he was a very jealous man and a huge pompous ass!
